well, at least I could join "the club" if I owned a Mac. owning 10 ipods apparently isn't enough to gain access.

....because standard OSX would be horrible to use on a small touch screen device. If it was a version of OSX which had been adapted to run in a multitouch environment then all well and good......oh wait, hold on.....that's what they've done isn't it.
I'm not one to sing the praises of ANY version of OSX, but it would be an improvement over the phone OS. My PREFERENCE would be Windows, actually. Apple sells computers that run WIndows, so don't discount the future possibility for Apple to make a tablet that runs windows. 🙂

If Apple did make a tablet that runs Windows, how would that be different from all the wintablets that are currently out or are coming out soon? For example, right now I'm running Windows 7 on an iMac, and other than having the option to boot into OSX if I choose, the experience is no different than running Windows on a Dell or HP.

That's all fine and good. Everyone clearly likes a choice and since you like many others thinks Apple has dropped the ball, why not outsource your tablet and get what you want? It's all Apple hardware and their OSX legally in tablet form. Seems like a easy fit for those like yourself looking for this type of device. The modbook looks like a nice tablet, I'd think someone would buy a $999 MB and have the mod done for $699. Many times more powerful than the iPad, full OSX, likely DVD drive and all the benefits everyone seems to be looking for. Why has this not caught on then?
So that would tell me people wanting a powerful full OSX tablet with all the trimmings are to cheap to pay for it? go figure.
That same reason is why tablet's with full OS and all those features haven't found success over the past decade and probably why Apple isn't wasting their time making one no one will buy.
But there's a difference.
The link you pointed to - unless I'm reading it wrong takes your current laptop and does a conversion. So you're paying for the device and the conversion.
If Apple were to make an actual device - you wouldn't need the "up" charge of the conversion.
And in mass quantity - not on a "order by order" basis - the cost would not be NEARLY as high as it is with that link.
I don't (and you don't) know what that price would be. But to compare "as is" is to err I think

Windows Netbooks (in general) can run iTunes, and play any of the above. They also can play AVI, WMV, VOB, and any other video format there is a downloadable codec for.
IPad Music: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
Windows Netbooks (in general) can run iTunes and play any of the above. They also can play WMA, FLAC, OGG, etc.. Any audio format there is a downloadable codec for.
Simply put you can download software, drivers, codecs, etc, to add to a netbook's capabilities. Although you'll have an App store for the iPad, you won't find additional codec there to add to the iPad. I've searched the app store for codecs to add to my Touch with no luck.

The only netbooks that can play 720p are the new ION ones and how many of them have been released?
If I want all that I'd use a full-sized Laptop/Macbook. Not an underpowered netbook with crappy display that can barely run Notepad.
You are correct, that link only showed the "conversion" price, so yes it's $699+ whatever MB or MBP you supplied. White MB mod would run $1700 min. Apple could shave the cost if they wanted but I personally belive Apple has laid the path it's going down. iPhone OS/multi touch iPad tablets. So if their is a tablet running "full" desktop OS's, I don't think it's going to be SJ introducing it anytime soon. I'll gladly eat my words if the iPad fails to take off, but my bet is on millions going out the door and Apple building on it's Arm platform, which won't include anything other than the iPhone OS.
I think you could estimate the price, but you have to assume the specs. If it's exactly like the 13" macbook, but with the keyboard half gone and a 9.7" 4x3 touchscreen instead, it'd still be (about) a $1000 machine, just much thicker and heavier than the iPad with a shorter battery life. That would kind of suck, so I doubt they'd design it that way. I can't predict the design. Tell me the design, I'll tell you the price.
You don't need to wait for Apple. Several other manufacturers already make tablets that run Windows. How well do they sell? How many do you own?

This is what is so dumb about this discussion when it comes to what OS should be on a tablet. There are already horrible tablets that run bad tablet oses and do all the things people think are so awesome and absolutely nobody buys them.
Except of course the people who buy them. Not many, I'll agree. Until you have hard numbers to back your absolutes your posts are nothing but fanboy rantings.
