I’m talking about in case of support and functionality. Is the sim free version the best configuration to buy? Verizon model? Att? Or Tmo?

Yes it’s right on Apples site. Each model has all the bands, so no more different models for the different carriers with different bands

This year is just one model so Essentially the sim-free model is ATT/Verizon/Sprint/T-Mo.

None, they are the same. It's just hat the ATT will still have a sim card in them, which you can remove. Sim-free models won't have a sim in them.
