What causes the iSight to go dark?

I opened Photo Booth today and I couldn't see anything, it was way to dark!

So I resetted the SMC (turned off iMac, unplugged everything for 15 seconds then plugged back in and turned on) and that fixed it.

But what causes that to randomly happen?

Well, the first thing to consider are the lighting conditions. iSights seem to well only in nicley lit rooms. There is a product available to help, but I'm not sure if its iChat only.

Also, there are some effects that make it look like its pitch black when really it isn't. Make sure you click on the effects toolbox, and then normal.
