Do you know how to Harry Potter the flashlight? Say “Siri, Lumos” to turn it on, and “Siri, Nox” to turn it off. Saves a couple of syllables instead of saying “Siri, flashlight” 🙃
It works! Just out of curiosity, how did you discover this Easter egg?

It is a shame the AOD has such a detrimental effect on the battery health though. [...]

AOD is a nice to have feature, but the display comes on anyway with minimal wrist movement when it is turned off, so I haven't missed it too much in 3 years personally. This probably isn't even an issue for those getting a new Apple Watch every year though, not that I am interested in doing that myself.

I've found it surprising that the AOD feature led to screen burn-in for my partner's Series 5 Watch! The burn in might have happened earlier but I think we only noticed it after maybe about 2 or 3 years of use. We could see the fitness ring burned in when the display was off. Luckily though, he eventually needed the battery replaced and of course, what Apple does for these devices is they replace the entire unit rather than just replace the actual battery so he got a like-new unit, so now there's no burn in.

I use the AOD every now and then but sometimes when I think that most of the time I'm not looking at my watch, I turn off the AOD. I don't find AOD too useful except when I am actively using my watch for sports like running and cycling. In those cases, to get the screen to activate with a flick of the wrist is still not fast enough when you are running/racing, or cycling, so AOD is perfect.

1) aod (makes it feel more of a watch)
2) multiple timers at once (use it daily when cooking) that can quickly be set with voice
3) notifications at a glance (then grab the phone if needed)
4) Quick Shazam
5) Quick outdoor temp check
6) quick see/set alarms

What changed for me?
For me, obviously IMHO, the design of the AW Ultra.

I have a chequered history with the Apple Watch.

I am a vintage mechanical watch owner — I love them. My favourite is a 1914 solid silver trench watch and it still ticks away… a 1900 Victorian pocket watch… I love their tactileness, the weight, the ticking sounds loud enough to hear at night.
By comparison the Apple Watch always felt dull and lifeless — even though I could control a large part of my digital life with it.

It is the product I would love to love and yet always ended up returning.

Original Apple Watch, then an SE 1…
Tried again with a AW6…

Anyway. Yesterday I had my AW Ultra 2 delivered. (Can't beat those Amazon deals! 🥴)

I hope it will be the clincher.

There is a premium leather band from Bandwerk on the way and right now I have it with an Alpine loop in Green — it feels — finally! — like the business. I just never got on with the aesthetics of the big black glass lump — especially without AOD.

So here's hoping I'm going to stick this landing! Finally.

👍

It looks good. I like what you’ve done with the watch face. And it looks like it fits your wrist well. I love my Ultra 2 while admitting that my wrist is a little small for it. The Alpine loop makes it look better on me.

Thanks!
I must say it feels just right…
Still getting to know all the ins and outs as well as the quirks.

I've never been a watch person, but I fancy buying the Santos De Cartier.

Steel, with the gold screws/accents just makes it look pukka.

Also, being the first ever wristwatch, it carries a lot of history.

A very classy watch, and definitely stands out.

I love how the watch is basically a mini iPhone, especially with cell service. You can do 99% of the things your phone can do if you just put in a little bit extra time to do it.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 battery life is a huge upgrade from my Series 7. I have Type 1 Diabetes and use a Dexcom CGM to display my blood sugar on my watch and alert me when it's climbing, falling, etc. My Series 7 couldn't get through a day even with low power mode on, I can get a few days on my Ultra 2 before I have to charge it.

It's fast, has a gorgeous large display, and with watchOS 10.2 (Series 9 and Ultra 2) Siri can now process requests on device and handle health data, logs, etc. super fast.

My previous Apple Watches have been great (1, 4, 7), but the Ultra 2 has become a necessity/game changer for me.

For me, the biggest seller on an AW is the haptic alarm. My whole life I’ve been that person who literally wakes up a minute or two before the alarm goes off because I can’t stand the sudden sound of an alarm waking me up. Sometimes, my body would wake up in the middle of the night a couple of times because it just wants to make sure it’s up before the alarm. Really is a drag. With the haptic alarm, I sleep like a baby and can’t even begin to explain how much better my sleeping is through the night now. No more worrying about waking up before an alarm suddenly starts blaring, I just get a gentle and relaxing buzzing to my wrist. My mind completely at ease at night. I know it probably sounds ridiculous but it really is a game changer for my life.
Same here. The haptic alarm is my favorite. I hate loud alarms that nearly give me a heart attack when they go off and jolt me awake and it’s a horrible way to start the day. The gentle tapping on my wrist is perfect.

I also love the AOD. I have an ultra so I can deal with the extra battery usage. I want my watch to be a watch and I want to see the time at any time from any angle. I also love the temperature sensor because I ovulate, usually, although my watch is showing me signs of perimenopause 😅

My first watch was a 3 and it was fun for a bit but I just didn’t get much out of it. I decided to try again with the 6 and liked it a lot more. I jumped to an 8 but quickly sold it because I was too infatuated with the ultra. Now my watch is just as important to me as my phone.

I agree with you on haptic alarms. No more beginning the day being jolted by a loud alarm. I added a backup alarm on my iPhone to go off a few minutes after my Ultra 2 just in case. I feel like I accomplish something when I get to tap off waking up to a loud alarm. I'm also enjoying occasionally double-tapping to snooze as part of my morning routine when it works.

Nobody does haptics better than Apple and it's such an important part of the entire experience. Glad that it continues to be a major focus for the company.

Apple can detect things like shallow, deep and REM sleep so they should add an alarm that chooses the best time to wake you up based on your sleep cycle. I’m surprised that they haven’t done this already.
