Maybe it has to be paired first? Or perhaps the charging points are covered up on the Airpods and placed inside the case.

They are charging when they are in the case so yeah if they are out the case thats when they will die.

How many % is the case supposed to lose after a minor recharge of the airpods, say, 20%?

I am losing about 6-10%.
