It's interesting that the AirPods themselves are not on 100% as the case constantly charges them? Unless that only starts after opening them for the first time

Maybe it has to be paired first? Or perhaps the charging points are covered up on the Airpods and placed inside the case.
 
I think they are in "deep hibernation and battery preservation until bought"-mode until you unpack them.
 
Is the charging case always on when the AirPods are in there? Or is it like a Mophie where you can press a button when needed to give them juice?

They are charging when they are in the case so yeah if they are out the case thats when they will die.
