hah, coming from someone with a GM avatar

GM has a better and cheaper Hybrid systems. There is the one going into the Saturn Vue Greenline coming out this summer. Only adds $2k to the base price. Then their is GM's bread and butter system, the 2 mode hybrid going into the GMT-900 trucks and SUV's in MY '08. The 2 mode hybrid system was codeveloped by GM,DCX( Chrysler and Mercedes), and BMW. The 2 mode system should also be cheaper then Toyota's Synergy drive. Rumored Fuel economy for the Hybrid Tahoe is 20/27. Also, most of the Vortec V8's in the GMT-900's are E85 compatible. Meaning it can run on 85% Ethanol fuel.

On a side note, I was really wondering what your motivation is behind getting a Prius.

I have one, so I can tell you why I got mine. The Prius is more expensive than the Corolla, and a bit more expensive than the Camry, depending on options. But I got nearly $1000 back from Federal taxes and got $2000 back from state taxes. So if there is still a cost disadvantage it isn't so great. I wasn't in the market to buy the cheapest possible car, obviously, else I wouldn't have bought a new car to begin with!

The Prius hip and shoulder room is a bit less than the Camry, but a bit more leg room, and I'm tall and skinny. The engine is less powerful than the Camry, and on par with the Corolla, although I think it has plenty of power... I easily pass cars going up moderate coastal range mountains here. Plus, I liked the continuous transmission. I drove manual before, and didn't like the pause and jerk of automatic transmissions. The Prius is smooth that way.

Plus, we wanted a hatchback, and that limits the options. I've been happy with it. We get 40-50 mpg, sometimes above fifty for longer trips. The quality to me seems good. Haven't had any problems. People spend lots more money on a BMW or a Lexus because they admire the engineering and status. I liked the engineering of this, and it seems pretty cheap for a 'statement' car. And I do like that emissions are clean, it runs quiet, and I just don't visit the gas station that much.

In other news, GM reports it may make it to 100,000 miles without the doors falling off of it. :p

Don't make me come up to Annapolis to give you an a$$ whooping. You are within an hours drive! :p And my '96 Chevy Suburban was at 82K before we took advantage of the deals post 9/11 and got a '02 Suburban. It never had a problem. Same story with the current Suburban which is at 52K right now. my dad had a Corolla, and before it saw 20K it blew the manifold. Just like all car makers, Toyota can put out lemons as well. So far my '06 Chevy Equinox is doing fine too at 3K.

PS: Before anyone says I am driving a big SUV just for the hell of wasting gas, I use it to tow horse trailers. So I use the SUV for its purpose.

Anyone with a GM avatar doesn't mind having no doors. It can be marketed as a feature. They have convertibles, which does seem crazy at first as well.

one of the few, i've no problem with that :)

however, you stated it'll be 2008 for some of those models to arrive...WHY?? it's not as if it's amazingly new technology. actually, i do know why.

Personally, if I was in the car market - I'd buy a VW TDI or a Mini before I'd buy a Prius - cooler, better performing cars with comparable gas mileage.

Still, may be too late for that...

As for a Prius color, I reiterate the opinion of some that you should probably go silver - as it looks nice and hides dirt/salt pretty well.

Still, that wasn't a color w/in your original options...so I vote Blue.

Well I said MY '08. That means for the model year of 2008. So the Hybrid Tahoe/Yukon and the other trucks could be out next winter or Spring. Don't have all the details yet. Yes, GM is late to the party. It's better to be late, then having no hybrid at all. No, I don't agree with everything GM does. Like I disagree with Apple, I disagree with GM. Is GM( and Ford) playing catch up big time? Yes. Do I believe they will recover? Yes. Do I think they will still be #1 and #2 when the recovery happens? Maybe. Most likely Ford will lose the #2 spot this or next year. GM will probably lose the title of #1 in '08 or '09 if they don't turn around soon. They got their European division back to profitability. They are #1 in China right now, which will probably take the title of the biggest auto market away from the U.S sooner or later. They are doing well in Latin America as well. But, NA GM will be the hardest to turn around since us Americans hold grudges for a long time. :p
