Here's what you need to know: The sock should provide a transition from the pant leg to the shoe.

It should be kind of like a stepped gradient in that the sock darkness should be between the color of the pant and the color of the shoe and it should be of the same color hue. So, if you've got light brown pants and intend on wearing dark brown shoes, the socks should also be a brown that's at least as dark as the pants and no darker than the shoe.

Never, ever, ever wear socks with sandals...unless perhaps you are coming from, or going to, a sporting event in which you are participating which utilitizes shoes you would not wear off of the playing field- soccer or football cleats, for example.

When I wear shorts, I always wear sneakers (even if it's a polo-type shirt), and I believe that white socks are always acceptable in that situation.

Anything else? :)
I like these rules ... they make sense.

I still miss my sandals, though.

Hmm well. During the summer I was somewhat chastised at work for wearing dark socks with shorts. I try to wear the ankle length ones, but when they run out and all I have left are normal ones... the choice is limited. no socks at all with normal shoes is not an option, because my feet get too sweaty. Sandals: never owned a pair but they are quite cool looking - though at work they're not a good idea because I work in a lab (doesn't deter som, however).

I think in general: white socks only with sports gear, or if you are a chav you can wear them with anything. Ankle socks if possible with shorts or short-length trousers. Colour optional. And dark socks always with dark clothes.

IMHO ;)

Who are these silly fashion makers that decided socks and sandals don't go together, anyway? It is discrimination against us in colder climates. I wish to file a complaint.

Let's make an Online Petition. That'll show 'em.

The same 'silly' people who decide whether or not somebody is attractive or not. :p

Let me put it in a different way: I have never gone out w/ someone who wears socks and open toed sandals. ;)

So if you dated someone and suddenly he began wearing socks and open toed sandals, you'd dump him?

No need to get testy... :( It's not my fault PowerBook G5s aren't out. But to answer your question, hopefully I had made a good decision in getting w/ that person and as such it could be worked out.

Or maybe just ignore them ... we're not in the EU, anyway. We can have our own sock rules. ;)

SOCK COLOR CANNOT BE LIGHTER THAN THE PANT COLOR - so my dad says and he knows things like that. Belive you me. According to himself.

And I agree with the no socks in sandals.

Personally I'm only wearing socks that are striped or with other patterns in happy colors. Decided to wear more happy cloth. And it really does make people smile

btw - this most be the fastest expanding thread for weeks!! Can we beat the heteros and the gays?

So now there's hetero person, gay person and.... sock person?

Edit: One pair of socks I have in my closet have a picture of a teddy bear. They're cute :p

I really doubt this thread will catch up the gay and hetero thread (and the most annoying phrases thread). There's only so much that can be said about socks, right?

Anyone with a sock fetish? :p

5 simple rules for socks:

• Colored socks with shorts is wrong, no matter the footwear.
• White socks with dress/suit pants is a bad plan, particularly if they are athletic socks.
• White socks are okay with jeans, as long as you have athletic footwear on.
• Colored socks are okay with jeans, as long as you're not wearing athletic footwear.
• Socks with sandals or other open-toe footwear is wrong, people.

Well, you had to ask.... Actually, I have a (bad) habit of un-matching my sox. I will usually wear two different colors. When I get up, my feet decide on their individual color.. I usually wear pants, so I don't get too much flack, although I usually kick off my shooes when I get to work. I am VERY fashon illiterate. :D

very simple.
Black socks. Always. Buy nice ones, Calvin Klein or similar.

White socks only for sports, if at all.

Avoid socks + sandals if possible.
If too cold, wear shoes instead of sandals.

No cross pattern socks, and no silly fashion trends.
Black socks.

White socks with a dark suit, too?
I wore white socks with a dark tuxedo at my wedding.

But only for a minute, so we could take a photo and switch back to the proper dark socks. The photo was for the purpose of teasing my (new) mother-in-law, who worries about such stuff.

Nurses wear sandals and socks, don't they?

My mom's not a nurse, but it's pretty close (afraid the english word escapes me at the moment). She always wear sandals and socks. Though it's not beach type sandals. (Mirage anti-static sandals).

Micheal Jackson wore white socks?

Socks with diagonal crosspatterns are wicked.

I would wear these exclusively.

Love socks.
No pun intended.

Does nobody here watch "What not to Wear"? According to Clinton, the socks should match the pants. This is because if your pants are a bit too short, or when you cross your legs, etc., the socks act as a sort of camoflage, creating the illusion that everything is all right. If your socks matched your shoes, the illusion would be lost.

Unfortunately, if you're wearing socks with sandals, none of this applies. It's pretty much impossible to look good. If your feet are sweaty, my advice is to get some really well-ventilated shoes. Suede is usually the worst, and cloth is the best (though often unattractive). Some leather shoes do breathe well -- you can usually tell when you try them on if they're going to make your feet claustrophobic. I've had excellent luck with Rockport shoes. Clark's is another good brand.

i hate when people wear socks with the birkenstocks, its just wrong...

...but Birkenstock makes socks for this purpose! So we can be a hippy in the winter! I love mine, wear them all the time.

White socks with tennis shoes.

I have some formal white colored dress socks that I will wear when I have a white shirt on. I think of socks matching the shirt much of the time. I have different colored dress socks: blue, brown, green, tan...some small decorum or pattern.

Oh I also have some white thick socks I wear with my birks. Their pattern and texture is different than the traditional gym sock.

Do you mean Argyle? I love argyle print socks/ cardigans/ sweaters/ etc. *sigh*

I don't wear socks with beach sandals. But, when it comes to my other sandals, then I do wear socks as if I didn't then parts of the sandal would rub against my feet requiring a bandaid.

Bob Marly died of skin cancer that originated on his feet.

a man's feet is the way to his brain

I think this thread is the best yet in MacRumors :D

I think you can tell a lot about a person's political persuasion just by looking at his feet.

Teva sandal without sock = mainstream liberal
Teva sandal with sock = Berkley radical hippie who speaks to the clouds
J Crew sandal = moderate (middle of the road)
Acrocrombie&Fitch = mainstream conservative, definitely not the I'll pray for you type
dull brown leather shoe = rightwing gun carrying white guy
dark color socks with trainers (gym shoes) and a footbol jersey = a socialist white European staight male

Okay these are just silly stereotypes and the correlations are weak in some. I would be offended if you take my stereotypes seriously. However, I would bet a CIA operative would use these visual signal to gather info!
