Thought it would be easier to bring back this thread than start a new one to clog up the forums.

I'm thinking that now they've hit the king of the jungle it's time to move on to something else - OS XI next?

I'm thinking that with Lion we might see a longer than usual life cycle, and then Apple will deliver the next BIG thing, rather than a point upgrade. Whether it be called Mac OS XI, or as someone mentioned in here perhaps the entire product line will be revamped and all run on a system called iOS - who knows?

What are other people's thoughts on the future of Mac OS X?

Leopard to Snow Leopard, why not Lion to Mountain Lion?

But after that we'll probably see a new naming system just as the OP said.

Cats are done by 10.9

I read in another forum the speculation was that the next OSX series will be named after constellations or stars. Separate named galaxies themselves would be cool as well.

What is the next OS going to be after OSX Lion?

windows 8 of course! and it'll have a brand new 'mission center' and 'launch site' the might look similar, but you swipe the other way, so totally different. and since lots of windows phones don't have a screen that rotates, the new 'normal scrolling' will mean that on desktops and laptops, you swipe left to go down, and right to scroll up. you'll get used to it.

if Apple sticks with cats, i think it should be 10.8 Cat in the Hat! :D over 250 new features, many that rhyme, and also includes thing 1 and thing 2.

knowing apple, the next release will probably be an injectable serum and turn your glasses into a heads-up display (glasses required, not included). only thing i worry about is where the thunderbolt cable gets plugged in...

I so want an iOS X. I mean, please, isn't that name just begging to be used since the iPhone OS was ditched for iOS? :D

Why not OS X Cougar...

No actually I think Apple will create a new breed, and call it the iCat or something.
Then it'll be OS X iCat.

OSX Smelly Cat

OSX Wet P***y (I do apologize)

OSX Blue Waffle

On a serious note have we had Cheetah.. they are the fastest of the cats... ah yes that was the first...

OSX Bagpuss

I thought it was already announced?

Well, Apple has sort of established a pattern of biannual OS X releases and yearly iOS releases, so here's how I see it.

2012: iOS 6
2013: iOS 7 & Mac OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"
2014: iOS 8
2015: iOS 9 & Mac OS X 10.9
2016: stop-gap iOS release (9.1 or 9.5?)
2017: Combined OS, called iOS X. (iOS 10.0)

My vote goes for OS X Ocelot.

Besides Mountain Lion, I think they're really out of cat names. Wouldn't be surprised to see an "under the hood" Snow Leopard style update to Lion come next, either call it Mountain Lion or even White Lion as another poster had suggested.

After that, it's probably time for OS XI which will likely focus on natural gesture and voice inputs. I don't see true "touch screen" PC's, they don't work well, but newer, slicker incarnations of the trackpad or motion based controls make lots of sense.
