Born in Michigan, USA.

Also lived in: Rome, Italy for 5.5 months to study abroad. All these countries (minus Canada) happened while I was already in Europe:

Canada

Italy (all over from Matera to Venice)
Poland (Katowice, Warsaw, Krakow, Auschwitz/Oswiecim)
Hungary (Budapest)
Czech Republic (Prague)
Slovakia (Bratislava)
Switzerland (Interlaken)
England (London)

It's been a few years since I've traveled much anywhere besides visiting friends back in Chicago or Cincinnati. I'm making a little trek down to Texas to visit family in San Antonio (new) and a friend in Austin (already been). If I can't travel abroad, my next dream trip is actually a multi-week road trip all over the U.S.

I'm game, though it's a short list for me.

US Citizen here.

I've lived in:

France.
Australia.

Visited:
Canada.
New Zealand (though I shouldn't have; I was in transit for my first trip to Australia; followed everyone leaving the flight at the airport instead of heading to the In Transit area, and accidentally "entered" the country, even though I had no visa to enter the country. Luckily, because this was at 5:30am in the morning, wasn't busy, and they were probably in a good mood (Rugby highlights were playing), they were forgiving enough to let me back in to make it to the in transit area. Otherwise I would have missed getting back on the flight!).

Never visited the United States eh?

Never visited the United States eh?

Strange to relate, no, actually, I haven't (and well spotted).

My travels seem to have taken me east, not west………

….And other countries seemed more pressing, more inviting, and so on. When I was an undergrad, my fellow students tended to work in Germany or the US for the summer. Almost all of my peer group who went to the US (as students), lived, for some years, a very sleazy, hard-drinking and heavy drug taking lifestyle; not my scene.

Yes, I like my wine, (and beer) but not in that way; again, my academic interests also took me east, not west, as has my career.

I suppose that I have never had a compelling enough reason to visit. Besides, given that I signed every petition going against US foreign policy in the 1980s, (El Salvador, Nicaragua, etc) - and was informed that this might be taken into account if I ever applied for a visa as a justification to deny me one - (though, granted, that was decades ago, now), I never even applied to visit.

In truth, in my days as an academic, if an opportunity to visit (and study/teach) had arisen, I would not have turned it down; but it didn't. So, some day, I'll pay a long visit.

What is interesting is that a few very good friends of mine (left leaning), - a number of different individuals at different times - who themselves, preferring 'high culture', had never visited the US and had never wished to, found, for a variety of reasons, themselves undertaking a visit with some reluctance. (Family, friends inviting them a conference, a seminar, whatever)...

Interestingly, they all reported back to me along the following lines:"I thought I'd hate it, but loved it; it was a brilliant experience and I'm really glad I went and saw it and experienced it. I know that you're the kind of person - like me - who likes history and culture and never really thought the US worth looking at, but you should try it sometime, as I think you'd really love it."

So, some day, yes, I'll plan a trip and explore, and take the time to pay a serious visit, across The Pond.
