Very nice! How do you like your Herman Miller Embody Chair? Is it worth the investment?

Thanks,
Bryan

I bought an embody chair. Went for the polished aluminum base and the translucent casters. Here's a tip- Herman Miller dealers give deep discounts to architects! So get your architect friend to gift it to you!

Here's what mine looks like:

I'm not getting a new iMac, but a good iMac or Apple friendly desk is iSkelter's SlatePro desk. You can customize the desk to suit your needs. I received mine via the Kickstarted campaign and love it.

I'd personally be looking at a partner desk.

It's a type of desk that used to be quite common within the UK (although the desk used by the majority of US presidents over the last hundred years is a partner desk). It's particularly large as the original design was to allow two people (or partners) to work on the same desk at the same time.

So it is one mighty big desk so you would need to be sure it doesn't over power the room, but if you have the space then I can't think of a better place to park an iMac.

You are looking at £400 for a second hand solid mahogany partner desk. Depending on condition you can spend more or get a real bargain around £100 if you are willing to invest some time in polishing and renovation.

Post some pics, I'd love to see it. I'll put mine up when I get it next week!

Better late than never. Sorry for the delay. :) Here's what the desk looks like today. Until I can sell it, I've kept the old iMac as a second screen.

Good question.

I just bought a riMac (my first apple computer), will get it delivered by Dec 8-12 (hopefully). I knew I would be buying it when it came out, so I wanted a desk that would match the quality of my apple machine. I decided to get a custom made desk from reclaimed yellow-leaf heartwood pine. The heartwood was used by the first settlers that came to Canada and USA out of pines that have grown on this land for 400-500 years. It’s extremely dense, heavy, rot and bug free, and it’s no longer available as all of those trees have been cut down. My carpenter is reclaiming this wood from a 140 year old distillery in northern Canada. I chose the very rustic look, it’s weathered, has saw marks, nail holes, and looks absolutely amazing when sanded, planed and varnished.

If you guys are interested, I can give you his name. He is located in Canada (2h away from Toronto), and is around 5h away from me. I’m picking up the table on Monday (took 3 weeks to make), and I’ll be able to post some pics on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, if anyone is interested. The 6 foot x 32 inches table is running me about $875 all in. A decent price for wood that will never be available again. Super excited, I’ve been waiting for it almost as much as my riMac ;p

Hi CPHowitzer,

Can you please give me the name of your carpenter? I, too, would like to order one of these desks.

Also, if you have time, can you please post pictures of your desk?

Thanks,
James

I love these pictures! Some of you make my ikea desk look like poop. LOL
I have an ikea desk made of fake wood. LOL It was around 50.00 but I've had it for 4 or more years!

Just google "reclaimed lumber $your_city". The lumber yard will point you in the right direction. Since I'm in Cambridge and Manhattan, I use the famous Longleaf Lumber to source my wood then I head into my workshop...

Go to their site and enjoy the wood porn! :)

Mine's a smaller version of this - retrieved from a skip, had to make a new top for it, and a couple of new drawers, but i'm very happy with how it turned out.

Very nice i have something similar, i love how the modern iMac just sits beautifully on an old oak desk, i like your iPad stand as well.

I absolutely love the concept! Unfortunately, I live in the UK, and we don't have that kind of furnitures around here (and not for that price! It seems very cheap for what it is).

I'm more looking for an easily available desk, but I would love to see the pictures of your desk when you have it (with your riMac on top!)

Here's my desk:

Let me know if you like it and i'll hook you up with the guy that built it for me. He's in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, around 5h from me. Worth every penny.

Hey is there a way to private message you his number? I don't know what the external link policy of this website is. Do I just type it in here? Pictures are above. The desk looks great, the pics don't do it justice.

I am using a Bolia Labora desk along with a Håg capisco chair

Einstein: “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?”

Messy desk is the sign of a creative mind!

It's not empty. It's organised. Which also answers your (Einsteins) question ;)

I can't show you pictures of my desk for my 27" riMac yet...as I just ordered it today. I will take pictures in a few weeks after I get it and set it up.

(Getting an iMac has inspired me to finish the room that I will be keeping it all in.)

In the meanwhile, here's a screen capture from their website!

I have a lovely Mac Mini now with SSD and 16G RAM. My target is to buy an iMac 27" later this year and probably sell the Mini. Along with the iMac, I plan to completely redo my office to look sleek and clean. I've already started selling pieces of my Cherry laminate furniture.

This is the desk I would love to buy, but I only know of manufacturers in China so might be an ordeal to have one made and shipped from there. I hope to be able to do it.

They are made of Corian solid surface so are not cheap unfortunately. Hoping for a tax refund this spring :)
