Total newb question? What does the "r" stand for in rMBP.
Im on my MBP all the time still trying to figure out the ins and outs of the thing, I guess I had no real reason to get a Mac but I needed a laptop for general purpose but so far I love my iPhone 5 and MBP.
Im going to but iPhone 5s and sell my current 5 which is been cased since day1, but thats a different story

The r stands for retina (likewise, the c in cMBP stands for classic to refer to the MBP with the optical drive and no retina display).

And as long as you're happy with your purchase, then it doesn't matter what comes out next. Just use it until it no longer does what you need it to.

I just recently joined the Apple scene by purchasing an iPhone 5 and decided to get a Macbook pro 256gb w/retina display to complement my iPhone 5 you can say.
I was laptopless for 2 years coming from a Dell 700m(it was ancient) and bit the bullet and got the top of the line laptop or so I think to browse the web, its probably overkill but I love it and never look back. So I was wondering what you guys use your laptop for or main purpose (i.e. school, photoshopping, gaming or music editing).
Im interested to know what these computers can do in a small package. Also I searched and didnt find anything on this unless Im blind. :)

I am a college student in school for Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering. That being said, I use my computer for research, note taking, writing papers, programming, and various other components relating to those mentioned.

I bet you are enjoying your new Apple MBP though :)

I have $2000.00 saved up and haven't pulled the trigger yet. I don't know which model I want. I'll be using for e mail, web browsing, skype, you tube, paying bills, e bay/Amazon,burn cd into i tune, importing personal photos and editing (I want Photoshop).

To be honest, for your uses the 13" MBA will work perfectly fine (you could even get the top of the line model and have money to spare). But if you want the retina screen, then by all means go for the rMBP. If you go with the 13" model, I'd say bump up the storage because 128 GB may not be enough.

I am an IT freelancer. I use a MBP 15'' Late 2011 with 8gb of Ram and an SSD, and I use it mainly for : Safari, Mail, Calendar, Wunderlist, various services of Cloud Storage, Photoshop, Lightroom, Xcode, Vmware, and many others.
I know that to gain more power I would need an iMac or a Mac Pro, but I absolutely love the advantages of the portability. Even if my MBP sometimes struggles (only with Virtual Machines) , almost always it works like a rock.
I am waiting the 16gb RAM kit, surely it will give to me some additional power to manage some kind of tasks.
It is really a powerful machine.

I bought my 15" rMBP in June of 2012 to post in the forums here, mostly to complain about when the new Haswells were coming ;)

But seriously I do coding and web development and so couldn't wait to see all that crisp text. I haven't regretted buying the rMBP once.

16gigs will do the trick with your list. With it, that machine should last a long time. Just imagine how much of a chump you'd feel if you spent $2k on the rMBP, and then picked up using VMs. Which is a main reason I am disappointed with the way Apple is going - anti-consumer.

Light photo editing. web, movies, daily use with documents.

early13 retina13 is good for that!

Civil Engineering Student:
-Microstation
-AutoCAD Civil 3D(teaching myself, I want to be a transportation engineer, and Los Angeles DOT uses this. California DOT is about to switch to this)
-AutoCAD for Mac 2013(far superior to AutoCAD for Windows)
-Excel/Word
-Gaming
-Browsing

Basically it serves as a mobile power house. Coming from a $500 dell this laptop is simply amazing.

I WILL buy a rmbp because I find the screen on the MBA crap.

I've bought a mba last year and returned it because I couldn't work with that screen for more than 1 hour. The viewing angles are insufficient, color gamut is limited, and there's not enough screen estate.

So to have a mobile solution it's either air or retina. there's no in between. that's why i'm going with the retina.

I'll use

safari/chrome
skype
world of warcraft
pages/word/excel/numbers/

occasionally:
photoshop/illustrator

People judge here because you only ought (according to them) to buy a pro when you need it's processing power. Well I buy a retina because of the screen and the fear of not having sufficient processing power when using the air on a big screen.

i bought the MacBook Pro Retina for 3D modelling, video editing and casual gaming on the go.

I bought my 15" cMBP for audio/video production, "life" activities, and programming. Plus its a beautifully crafted machine. Oh, and all my friends have one lol.

Need 2 extra screens for working

+ need good cpu for virtualize with wine

+ need powerfull hardware able to run java software

+the simplicity of a mac

Currently waiting for haswell to see the improvements to the 15" rMBP. Might buy an ivy bridge if the price difference weighs out the haswell improvements. I'm a college senior and I'm currently using a 2009 13" mb and it's not cutting it anymore. I don't game so graphics aren't too much of an issue with me but I do use a few windows virtual machines (research, coding, paper, microsoft office suite, fansubbing, etc.) I use the mac side for most of my surfing, syncing, and music production. I have a pretty good hackintosh but will need a laptop since i'm always at school this semester and i'll be traveling overseas.

you have 8tb drives..

I ended up with the rMBP 15.4" mostly for processing photos, and regular use, like chat, browsing, documents and banking. Got it last thursday, and it works like a charm! Can´t see any problems with the screen either, the LG gen2 screen. I needed a quadcore for processing photos in DxO Optics Pro, since I can easily do a bunch of 30-60 photos, and that took way to long time on my MacBook Air 13" (Mid 2012).

I got my 17-inch Early 2011 MacBook Pro as an early Christmas present in late November 2011. It was a replacement for a Toshiba Satellite, which I had gotten a month prior and was actually quite pleased with. The same things that I did on my Toshiba are the things I do on my MacBook Pro. A little bit of WoW, watching videos, music, etc. I certainly don't take full advantage of the power that my computer offers, but this also makes it so I'm not wanting to get a new laptop every few months. And to be honest, if 18-inch laptops were easier to come by, I wouldn't have gotten the MacBook Pro.

I know this sounds probably stupid but I have to admit I probably bought my rMBP cause I bought an iPhone 5 and for web surfing for this forum :D I got my 5 a month ago now buying 5s out right in few days. This is a very expensive hobby but i love Apple products coming from PC and Android.

Well you keep saying you bought it due to the iPhone 5 and for web browsing. It's overkill for that. But if you really love Macs and had the money to spare, then more power to you.

Most people, including myself, use Macs for productivity and because we really like OS X.
