I used to sing the songs out loud, but the RIAA sent me a "cease and desist" letter and threatened to sue me, so I just hummed the song and listened to the lyrics in my head. :p

Nah, I used to use a walkman AM/FM/cassette player. I typically listened to AM radio.

I too had a skip-free Sony Discman, refused to buy an mp3 player until the costs came down and I had a means of storing more music on my computer via new hard drive :)

Just before the iPod the Creative Zen 30gb. Prior to that my CD players mostly and then before that a Walkman of course. :)

Before my first iPod, I used a Sony MiniDisc Net MD Walkman. It was a great player with good sound and long battery life. Unfortunately, the SonicStage software was probably the worst piece of software I have ever used.

Thanks to that truly awful software I got a 3G iPod. It was a big step at the time, the iPod was 3 times the price of the MD, but it was so amazingly easy to use that I got myself a 2nd hand Mac 3 weeks later and it's been Apple all the way ever since :D

Ridiculously overpriced Sony MP3 player, and before that a CD player...good times...

DVD+r with mp3s in my DVD player in my car. Laptop at work, desktop at home. Nothing elsewhere. Now I use my Ipod in all locations even though at 80gb it only carries just under half my library.

Same here. I have a Sony MiniDisc Net MD Walkman MZ-NF610. It is an EXCELLENT player, with FM Radio and an in-line remote control. But I agree with you, Sonicstage is the absolute worst software EVER. I used RealPlayer for loading Minidiscs with mp3s, but RealPlayer isn't the best software out there either. And there is no support on OSX, so I still use and old WinXP desktop for this (among other things).

Having said that, I still use it when I go to the gym - I think my 40GB iPod Photo is just too big and heavy.

I also have a 10-CD Sony Xplod CD Changer that can play mp3s in my car. I rarely use it nowadays, since I got my iPod a few years ago.

I was using a portable CD player until I purchased my 1st generation iPod the day it came out.

People on the subway would look at me like I was from outer space or possibly the future with my white earbuds and incredibly tiny (at the time) MP3 player.

Everybody except for fellow Mac users. Those were the days when the only people with iPods were those with Macs.

Sony

Yep, Sony Discman with 40 or so seconds of anti skip protection. Damn batteries lasted at the most four hours. Them were the days...

Portable Cassette Player>Portable CD Player>4 GB iPod nano white (1st Generation)>8 GB iPod touch

I had one of these bad boys my freshman year of high school...

When I ordered it directly from Sony I bought that color, only to be told it wasn't available, so I ordered a yellow one instead. Only Sony misunderstood that I wanted BOTH and even though I cancelled the order on the blue one I got both of them like it or not. It lasted about 6 months before it quit and I sold the other on eBay. Lesson learned: never order direct from Sony.

Then I "upgraded" to one of these my sophomore year of high school...

It was alright and played good but I had to get the headphones replaced by Dell only for them to mess up too (the rubber around the plug would crack). Then in the spring of 2006 I was running on the treadmill only to have the hard drive in it crash, so I bought an iPod. Lesson learned: never buy anything Dell.

Lesson learned: never buy anything Dell.

I found out that one the hard way as well....

$2000 Dell Laptop
$150 for a good laptop bag
$59 P&H
$250 for an extend warranty

Having the dam thing break after 366 days and having Dell support say that you are 1 day out of warranty and it will cost $1900 (not including shipping) for a repair job, Priceless

I used a Craig portable cd player. seemed like it needed new batteries every 3 days or so. A few years later i upgraded to a 20G Creative Zen Sleek. Then i gave that to my mom and bought my current best friend. a 60G 5th generation ipod. best purchase i ever made.

i had a Phillips CD player, lasted me many years...it also had 60 seconds of skip protection.
then i bought the original ipod nano 2gb.:D
then i bought my current 30gb 5.5
next ipod is going to be a 32gb ipod touch:D

I had CD players in my cars. I think I had a cheap portable, but didn't really listen walking around or anything. Once I had my case of CDs stolen for the second time in a year, I bought an iBook and a 20gig 3g iPod. I now have an 80g Classic, and love it. It's so great having your entire music collection (and a few movies) with you at all times.

Wait you are telling me the HD crashed because it was a Dell? First of all Dell is using a Toshiba HD, possible the same model as the ones in the same year ipod. Then again it is not recommended to run with an actual HD so yeah.
