What do I need to backup my 13" MBPr late 2013?

Do I need to get an external hard drive?

Or is there another way I can do it?

What is the best and low cost external drive I can use?

As big as you like. If TM doesn't have enougn space it will delete older backups.

when to back up can be ajusted in the time machine menue.

I don't see a menu?? It just tells me it'll backup every hour, week, month, etc.

That 's it. There is also a button "backup now". It should also backup immediatly when you first setup TM.

Tick the 'Show in menu bar' option in the Time Machine preference pane in System Prefererences. Then, from the menu bar, you'll be able to start a backup manually and see when it last backed up to the drive.
