Do I need to get an external hard drive?

Or is there another way I can do it?

What is the best and low cost external drive I can use?

You can use any storage solution (hdd, ssd, sd, thumb drive, cloud) and Time Machine.

Or better yet, a combination of the good examples mentioned above.

How big does the storage have to be?

As big as you like. If TM doesn't have enougn space it will delete older backups.

That 's it. There is also a button "backup now". It should also backup immediatly when you first setup TM.

Tick the 'Show in menu bar' option in the Time Machine preference pane in System Prefererences. Then, from the menu bar, you'll be able to start a backup manually and see when it last backed up to the drive.
