What do the major companies use? (software)

I think an individual's skills are much more important than the ability to use the latest tools. Start by learning the basics... get your hands dirty, have fun playing with film. Perhaps from a cheap Super8?? Start experimenting!! Doesn't matter about making mistakes, it's all about exploring!
