I would think using headphones would be worse...since the water could follow the cord right down to your phone. Also when the headphones are plugged in I'm fairly sure that's not a completely waterproof connection. So plugging headphones in could actually cause more damage than prevent it.

I would just put it in my pocket. Unless it's a torrential downpour that soaks my clothes to the skin...the phone will be safe.

What I've done before, especially when going to theme parks and whatnot, is bring along a Ziploc bag and put it in the bag when water could be an issue.

I do the same thing when I'm at the beach--I just put it in a Ziploc bag and I'm all set. Best yet, you can even answer the calls from within the Ziploc. Ultimate (and cheap) protection with (almost) full functionality!
