The dynamic island is proving to be very distracting for someone like me, who listens to music all the time while using my phone, that music equalizer animation being shown all the time on a black background on top of white screens is too distracting.

What do you do to try and mask it?

I have dark mode on all the time, the thing is on dark mode a lot of apps are dark grey instead of black (which I understand from a design perspective, white text on pure black is a bit too much contrast) so while it is definitely better than white backgrounds with the dynamic island on top, is still not ideal; safari is a good example of that, dark grays on the app but website decides themselves what kind of color they want their backgrounds to look like, and a lot just go with white backgrounds.

I also use a dark background in my homescreen and lockscreen, that is actually a decent solution.

I think the dynamic island is worse than the notch in the iPhone 13, actually the original notch on the iPhone X up until the notch on the iPhone 12 was better, the dynamic island cuts more into videos (and I'm not talking about stretched out videos to fit the whole screen), the iPhone 13's notch cut less into the videos and the iPhone X-12's notch was kept hidden all the time (except while watching ultra wide videos or stretching them).

I like the concept of the dynamic island, but maybe it would have been smart to keep it attached to the bezel.

Nothing, because like the notch and every other device's cutout, it becomes completely invisible in my peripheral after about 5 minutes.

I actually missed an airdrop notification as it was a large file and the progress bar was at the top, instead of the center, and so I got thrown out of my app randomly to that airdropped file and was confused.

The Dynamic Island is cool but it could also not be there and I would've never noticed.

You know if you swipe right on the dynamic island, the equaliser goes away.
I must be missing something as it does not work for me.

Ok now it works, maybe I had the touch freeze issue again. 🤣 What a bug riddled launch!

Only a few videos I’ve watched on YouTube have cut into the DI and it was at the very bottom of it.

If I pull up a movie in TV the DI doesn’t interfere at all.

Nothing. I like seeing the Island, and the information that pops up there occasionally. Barely notice it when it's not doing anything, similar to the notch. Maybe I'm not as sensitive, but this doesn't bother any more than the notch did.

It's reassuring to know that I have immediate access to the podcast or live tasks running in the background.
