If I knew then what I know now!! I wouldn't recommend this Phd route to anyone. Unfortunately I am now a thirty something scholar in an obscure field, not good for anything but writing a dissertation. I should have gone to law school or medical school. At least I would be useful, and not argue with 18y olds that amnesty international is not an organ of the UN. Oh yes, a student wrote that. Just today, another declared International Law began in 1948. Teaching undergrads suck.

I want to go into business administration.
Hehehe.

But I mean, while I'm still a highschooler, I'm enjoying my free time by playing with my mac. I might have 1 PDF open and that's Steig Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. LOL....

I suppose within the next 4 years, my usage will change dramatically.

Wait! Lemme take a stab at this. International Law began around 1650 with the Peace of Westphalia? It's sad that I've already forgotten...

Lol!

Don't have my MBP yet, but I'll be using it as a development machine. Going to teach myself Objective C and try to put together an iOS version of my Android app. I'll also be using Eclipse for Android development, Visual Studio (bootcamp/VMware), and some terminal emulators for work stuff (iSeries) and Linux. Some photo editing is required with development, so Photoshop and Inkscape as well.

Additionally, I play WoW, a little Starcraft II, and a few other titles.

How do I justify buying a MBP? I'm hoping it will pay for itself with the iOS version of my 'droid app, but if nothing else the revenue from my Android app paid for it anyway. I need a single machine to do everything... no desire to run an iMac at home and have a different gaming PC and a different laptop. The new 15" MBP seems to foot the bill.

Programming (TextMate or straight terminal with vim for C/C++, Eclipse for Java), Adobe CS, light 3D modeling/design (SketchUp), writing, occasional light gaming (Minecraft, Civ 4, Diablo 2, SNES emulators, DOSBox, Source-engine shooters), general web/email/music/movies whenever I'm away from my desktop.

For what I use my laptop for I don't need this nice of a computer but it's my money so oh well.

I browse the internet, basic web design, administrator on a bodybuilding forum, music, pictures, word/excel, Skype, etc. All basic stuff but I love the reliability, form factor, and battery life of the MAC's not to mention the resale value. You buy a $2000 Dell and 6 months later it's worth $400. Buy a $1200 Apple and a year later sell it for $900.

Clearly the macbook pro is still used by professionals and nurds.........except me, i use it to surf and play games and general day to day stuff, just like a pc user really, except i do it with class on a macbook pro :p

I am in all honesty a person who many apple users would loath, in the UK it would be like the council house kid going to a big posh private school.

And you know what........ I would still love my mac! :apple:

You are better than my students :) It starts with Vico. 15th century.

FFFF.
What is Vico?
LOL.

' n' I play SCII.
I forgot to mention that.
But I have it capped at 30fps.

I'm a young teenager (13-14, won't say anymore). Use mine to:

-Surf web and emails
-Use CS5 and some CS4
-Frequently use FCP
-iLife
-Going to start developing apps as well.

It almost kills it my lappy with CS5 and FCP running :p

FCP = Final Cut Pro?
What's the learning curve for that?
My friend has a copy that I'm thinking of borrowing.
Not sure about the whole 52gbs of space thing though. OTL

the sole reason i got a mac was for iOS development.

and i decided too get a 17" mbp instead of mac pro or imac because i already have desktops so it would be nice to get a laptop.

gotta love remote desktop from bed.

I use my 2010 MBP 13" solely for programming in Java for my start-up and streaming lectures when I don't feel like going to school.

Well, I've 'done' iMovie and, in the end, it just didn't do what I needed. I've used Macs from age 2 so FCP isn't a huge step up. Plus since my dads a film editor he gets it free from work :p

It's quite difficult to learn but you'll reap the rewards later on :)

Ohhh. Hahahhaa.
I got Office '11 and Adobe CS5 for free since Dad's a professor.
' n'

Hrm hrm. I'll have to make an effort to learn it then.
Unless I get sucked up into SCII again. OTL....

I got an 11" mba off craigslist for $600. Think the guy was leaving the country or something. Anyway, I just use it for

Word
Excel
Schoolwork (blackboard, connect, financelab)
Porn
Browsing
Porn
Email
And more porn
Well, there it is! :p

FCS only requires 4GB of space for the applications themselves and an additional (optional) 46GB of space if you want the additional contents like the fonts, music library, etc, which can be put in an external drive.

I'm kinda the odd one out here, as I have an overpowered mobile machine and underpowered desktop.
I don't have the patience to do any processor intensive work with my Mac Mini, (But it's still decently fast for web browsing)
and a powerful 15" Pro.
I use my laptop for any movie editing, photoshop (CS3, I can't afford the new version) web browsing, app development (for iPhone & Javascript) and anything else I might need that requires the i5.

Well, a lot of school work, lots of video editing, photo editing, and some light gaming, ei wow, black ops, brotherhood, stuff of that nature. Use bootcamp to game on win7, so all my needs are easily met and i get the joy of doing it all on the much better OS. MacOS. :D

We spend quite a bit on our Macs right? So, in all honesty how does oneself justify owning one and why?

I don't feel like I need to justify my choice to own a Mac. I like them, and they work well for me, so that's what I use.

I often operate in a 12-volt environment, so the laptop is a natural choice.

I use it for the following:

Web - surfing, researching, shopping/buying, learning
e-Mail
Chat
Photo storage and editing
Filing/storing documents and information
Writing
Watching DVD movies
Music storage, although I usually listen to music elsewhere (iPod)

I work with datasets. Today I ran a query that took ca 2hours. The footprint in memory was ca 1.5GB so everything helped including the Ssd. But my MBP is only 2.4GHz c2d. I think on the latest one it could maybe take an hour and my computer could be a bit more usable/responsive during that time.
But I only run such stuff every now and then and I can easily do that on a desktop too. In my case it doesn't really justify the huge expense of the latest shiny.
