I initially thought about waiting for the new Air, but the current price of the Pro with the Back to School is appealing; the back to school promotion will not be available by the time the new Air comes out. So may be not.

Since the new form factor is likely to be introduced with the next generation Pros, I don’t think of any important spec bumps-ups with the new Air. It will probably come with the M2, but the M1 is more than enough. And obviously Apple won’t give the Face ID and the Promotion to the Airs, then I can’t come up with any important new features.

What do you expect from the new Air?

I could see ProMotion trickling down to the Air and Mini someday. Not sure when, though. I’d expect a spec bump for now.

I actually don't even expect a change in the camera, as this might require a new Apple pencil and I doubt Apple would introduce it with the air. The M2 is a given. Maybe 128GB of storage if the pro is moving to 256GB as rumored. This would be a much bigger argument than promotion or the camera, as a lot of people choose the pro because of the limited storage in the base air, rather than promotion (many don't even know what promotion is).
So it's a very risky move for Apple and if they do you will see a lot of people here and on youtube saying that there is no reason to buy the 11" pro anymore. That's why I am still doubtful despite the fact that this seems the most obvious move since the base iPad is at 64 and the pro should move to 256.

That’s Apple’s problem. They still have failed to convince anyone that the iPad Pro line is a viable computer replacement for anyone apart from artists. The entire product line is a mess and it’s a travesty that basic features (such as Face Id) are deliberately withheld from the Air line all to make the Pro look more appealing.

All I can really say is "not much of anything at all".

Holding it at 64GB base storage is already a price increase, in my opinion. NAND prices have been in a freefall for the past 12 months. Apple could also delete the power adapter to save money. I hope they don't need to take that path though.

The fact that the base storage of the iPhone Pro Max has been bumped up to 256GB is a good indicator that we can expect the same to happen in the next generation of iPad Pros. That then opens things up for the 6th generation Air to move up to 128GB.

It makes sense, 64GB does seem too low for a mid-range device with the power of the M2. And it would feel even more out of place in 2025.

I expect we will also see some new colours as well, or at least different shades of colours.

It really is time for them to bump up the base storage, but it also might mean I bought the last 64GB Air generation 🤦‍♂️

I think ProRes was the main driver for the bump in storage on iPhone 15 Pro Max. Does iPad Pro have the same driver? And was it really a bump in storage? Or simply the removal of the 128GB option?

The iPhone Pros also support Pro Res but they didn’t get the increase in base storage.

I think the main driver from Apple’s point of view is maintaining margins. It’s likely that the new features in the Pro Max have put those margins under pressure and, although they haven’t increased prices across the board (the bigger capacity versions will have higher margins anyway), it is a significant increase to what is almost certainly the biggest-selling version in the range. Increasing the base storage is a way of justifying that price increase.

If the rumours are to be believed, we can expect a significant increase in the price of the next iPad Pros. Again, margins are likely to be under pressure - OLED, etc., and I expect Apple will do the same with the base storage.
