What do you need to plug in real instruments in garageband

I haven't really got the hang of it yet, but I don't want to use virtual instruments, I want to record with my set up. Is there some box or connector I need to plug in my guitars or mic to the macbook pro to record?

Ah, why thank you. I tried searching on the support but I guess I didn't use the right keywords......
