With the impending release of the 2019 Mac Pro what are your plans

  • I'm a day one buyer, bring it on, this thing is awesome!

  • I'm a "pro" who can't bring in enough revenue to cover the cost, I'll drool from the sidelines

  • I'm going to cobble together a bunch of parts and then steal MacOS to create a "hackintosh"

  • I'm obsessed with core count above all else so I'll talk about EPYC/TR but do nothing

  • I've never touched ML but I'll complain about no CUDA. Fortnite YEET!

  • I'll lack meaning in my life so I'll start complaining about timing of the 8,1

  • I care more about artificial benchmarks than workflow so I'll start a support group for PCIe 4

I don't like buying rev a. But... running a 2009 is going to force my hand. There isn't really a way for me to wait.

Plus when the 2013 came out I waited for a rev b that never arrived.

I figure in the next few years they'll either start moving to AMD or ARM. And with 10 nm coming I'm buying at the twilight of 14nm on Intel. But that's how technology goes.

I'm certainly not going to buy a brand new '19 Mac Pro, but it's nice to know that in a few years when my 5,1 starts giving up the ghost I'll have a upgrade option. Hopefully the base will be down to 1000$ by then.

In some ways though, the 2018 Mac Mini is more appealing because it can run Mojave and thus 32 bit apps, whereas the new Mac Pro will never be able to do this. I game in Windows on my mac, but if wine & moltenvk and such allow 32bit Windows games to run well on Mojave, I'd like that.

Also missing a

I can configure a Z-Series to match my needs, for far less, or for far more

option.

I believe that is covered by the obviously biased wording of option "I'm going to cobble together a bunch of parts and then steal macOS to create a "hackintosh" "

though "steal" is quite questionable term to use given the OS is 100% free

It's "free" in the same way that Windows coming with your HP makes Windows "free."

(In that it's not free.)

fact is macOS is not sold, it's not a retail product, period. now you will proceed to argue that you can steal something that has no measurable financial value to consumers.....

Windows is a retail product and is intended for sale and that is a discernible difference between it and macOS

I'm curious about the BTO prices.
I don't think I'm going to buy one in the next couple of years. But it will be interesting to have an idea of what a system for my needs will actually cost. That way, I can start saving and preparing myself mentally and physically for the massive cash burn. 😅

I don't have to argue that, it's codified in US law: 17 U.S.C. § 506(a) defines copyright violations and doesn't require direct payment (although make no mistake, those of us who acquire MacOS legally do pay for it) and 18 U.S.C. § 2319 defines penalties which also don't require you to be able to purchase the product for whatever use you've decided is permissible.

Good luck with your "I can't steal something that's free" defense though, I don't expect the judge is going to buy that any more than you're buying MacOS.

I will enjoy the fan rant around the 7.1 in the next view weeks. I will wait till it is confirmed that one or multiple AMD Vega 7 cards (Non MPX) work as well as PCI switch cards, such as my I/O Crest card.
Also I will go for a dual tray upgrade for my 5.1 with great pleasure while applying dosdudes1 hack to install Catalina.

When I get my coffee in the morning, it comes with a cup. But I can't buy the cup by itself.

That doesn't mean the cup is free and I can just go around stealing cups. That I can go to the store and buy a different cup doesn't make the morning coffee cup any more free.

(Stealing macOS is fairly victimless, unlike stealing a cup. But I'm just saying it's a bad comparison and it's still stealing.)

Maybe I could make a case with this logic that when I buy a Mac, I'm actually paying for macOS and that the hardware is what's being bundled in. I can't buy Mac hardware by itself without macOS. So therefore I should be able to go around stealing Mac hardware because it's basically a free add on to macOS.

Makes about as much sense.

I'm going to make bingo cards full of pirate rationalizations, you guys are a gold mine

I'm fairly certain Apple does not care about the home hobbyist Hackintosh crowd. But that's a very different thing than actually insisting that it's legally free because Apple bundles it and won't sell it separately. I'll let the cops know that as I steal seats that came bundled with in people's Teslas because they're "free."

That and I wouldn't want to rely on a Hackintosh for serious creative work. At that point, might as well use Windows.
