How well can these drive a 4K display? and what would be the best, well.. more cost effective 4K display to go for?

2015 rMBP display scaled to 1440 x 900

The guys that upgraded to a 2015 rMBP, are you using it in scaled mode to get 1440x900, or are you using it in retina mode, which gives you an effective 1280x800? I don't want to give up the real estate of the MBA you get at 1440x900.

I'm using the display scaled to 1440 x 900 for the same reason as you. It looks fantastic. It looks native, not scaled.

Thanks so much to those of you who replied to my comment (earlier on this item) the other day about the battery life, I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. I had diagnostics done at the Genius Bar which didn't find any problem with the battery in my machine. Activity monitor doesn't show anything hogging the CPU. I think the problem is just the way I use the machine, and especially the brightness setting. Anyway, not a big deal, I'm getting enough battery life for my needs and can try turning the brightness down a couple notches. Otherwise, I absolutely love the machine. Especially the display.

I'm thinking to buy MGXA2LL/A (Base model of 15" Macbook Pro with quad core 2.2 cpu) since there are good discounts. I can also buy the new 13" for the same price.

I am using R software for some computing in bioinformatics area for my PhD study. Which model I should take? Is there anybody using R statistical software with Macbook Pro 15" 2014?

It has I7-4770HQ CPU while 13" model has I5-5257U CPU with clock speeds 2.2 and 2.7 respectively. Does 13" model gives better performance than 15" model because of its higher single core speed?

I should buy the computer tomorrow. So your advices are very important for me.

My partner is in the last few months of her PhD in bioinformatics, she uses Matlab and laTex, her machine is nothing special, windows machine i5 2.5 I believe , quad core. She has no issues. Either model should be fine, in fact when I bought my late 2012 rmbp she asks if it was capable of running her software and the apple guys said yes, 2.5ghz i5 dual core. Hope that helps.

How well does it perform ? Any issues ?

No issues at all. Its pretty sweet that one cable (thunderbolt 2) will run audio and video to the display. LG has some good software for splitting the screen various ways. The best thing about it is the compatibility with Apple products. The 2015 rMBP will run that display at 60Hz with no lag.

on max brightness running chrome i get almost 7 hours of battery life, which is why i force quit chrome when on the road and switch to safari. i get about an hour more battery life then. im guessing if im more aggressive with turning down the brightness perhaps it might stretch to 9 hours

another software i use which i think is worth mentioning is transmission, i realised it consumes way less power than my previous go-to torrent client, utorrent. they must have optimised it for macOS better

Looks beautiful! it being 3440x1440 is the 1440 aspect constraining?

Glad I got the 2015 to be able to power a 4k display down the road if I ever offload my 24" ZR24W (1920x1200, 16:10)

So I'm still getting used to the Mac way of life, but there are a couple of things that have just happened that are.. er.. disturbing.

First off I stuck in a 16GB USB3.0 Key to copy across 4gb of photos. It took 14 mins. /seems a bit long I thought.

But secondly, I then tried to use that usb key to write the Win 8.1 ISO to and it said it it would take 16 mins to write 3gb to it.

Now I've used that USB key on my Win machine and have never had an issue with it.

Thoughts?

Would any of these work well with a new 2015 rMBP? i'm a bit un-educated regarding displays at the 'mo. Would generally be in clam shell mode when connected to an external display. (don't mean to go off topic - if it is)

I'd be interested in recommendations on this as well. These 4k display photos are making me insanely jealous.

I got the 2.7/8/256 model a couple weeks ago and am loving it. I was replacing a 2008 15" MBP, and I spent a long time researching what to get. I was pretty sure I'd go for a refurbished 2014 13" rMBP, but the Force Touch trackpad, faster graphics, and especially the support for a 4K display at 60 Hz made me decide to spend the extra money for the 2015 model. I have no regrets.

As others have said, the trackpad click feels completely real. I haven't thrown anything heavy at the computer yet, but it hasn't yet gotten more than lukewarm, whereas my 2008 MBP was hot pretty much all the time. I haven't measured battery life, but it recharges very quickly -- much, much more quickly than my iPad 4. It's so light and portable compared to my 2008 MBP that I can't imagine wanting a MBA at the expense of the Retina display, let alone the forthcoming Retina MacBook at the expense of ports and power.

My main computer for the past two years has been a late-2012 Mac mini i7. It's a great computer, but I really wanted the portability of another MBP. I'm trying to decide whether to sell it or keep it as a backup computer and media server. I also want to get a 4K monitor, and I'm trying to decide whether to go for the Dell P2715Q (which currently can be had for $550) or wait for more choices to become available.

From what I've found out, an IPS panel would be better as these are TN, the p2715q is IPS which Is why I'm guessing it's ALOT more than that p2815q. Thought the 2715 is still a really good price.

Really loving this thing, glad I waited a while before hopping on the retina bandwagon.

Waiting pays, sometimes.

It does actually click. It takes less force that before too, which is nice. You can adjust the pressure it takes to do a "force click"

No, it does NOT actually click. It is tricking you with haptic feedback. Turn off your computer and try pressing the trackpad...guarantee you will not get it to click.

Of course it does not "actually" click. Feedback is so awesome that you can't tell it's not actually clicking. I tried with kids and wife and they say it clicks. Power off and it doesn't :)

This has got to be by far the best laptop I have every owned. And I've owned everything from Compaq lunchbox luggables to 9" monochrome NCR laptops, to Toshiba, Thinkpad, Lenovo, Samsung, Dell, etc. etc. Everything is tight. The hardware, the software, everything. This screen is GORGEOUS. The SSD is crazy fast. This is my first laptop with 16GB of RAM. It just FLIES.

And I really, really hated trackpads until I bought my MacBook Air. Now I love them.

I love mine. I originally got the 2014 version MacBook 13" Retina.a little over 2 weeks later, they announced the new upgrades, and I was a little disappointed. I called my Apple Store, they told me to bring it in, they would credit me for the 2014 and I ordered the 3.1GHz i7 with 16GB RAM and 512GB Drive at the same price. These are the things I love about Apple.

This machine is much faster than anything I had. Coming from the 2012 Non Retina, I was nervous the graphics would negate the speed difference. No comparison. It is fast, renders my videos in Final Cut Pro X much quicker than the 2012.I like the size difference between the 2 also. This version is the perfect size and weight. The Force Touch is a great effect. Wouldn't know it wasn't actually moving if I didn't know what it was. So well worth it. I can see myself having this machine for 5 years.

finally upgraded from a 2011 macbook air and I really love this machine, not sure if i see a tinge of yellow on my retina screen yet maybe on the sides?
