I don’t see any really big design changes coming for the series 9 (and 2nd gen Ultra). Hopefully finally a new CPU (based around A15 efficiency cores?) which brings some battery life improvements and probably a new or improved sensor of some kind. Maybe they could introduce a 2nd size (smaller?) for the Ultra?

I think they have to do something pretty special, to stop things getting stale.
Stale? What are you talking about?
Battery life has been rated at 18hrs ever since S0 came out, then this year saw the Ultra…
Majority of people do not upgrade yearly, read thru the many posts here. Same trend as with iPhones…

My guess:
- New faster/more efficient CPU
- 4th generation heart rate sensor
- New colors (e.g., space black Ultra)
- BIA Sensor
- No new case sizes (same 49mm Ultra only)

Ultra:
With it being so new, I don't suspect any major changes. Maybe there's a dark titanium with a black action button.
So kind of the opposite of the current one and less in your face. Wild card could be a smaller 45mm version.

Series 9:
This is where things get challenging for Apple. A faster processor and better battery life are a given. The design has remained the same for generations but the same can be said about the Mac mini (sure, the 7/8 had subtle rounder changes, but it's almost imperceptible). The squircle shape is iconic and my sense is they will keep the current design and never change. There's too much risk launching a whole new look...and the Apple of today, isn't one to mess with a good thing.

I believe there will be a 40 percent faster S9 CPU, 24-hour battery time and additional 1 or 2 minor changes like a new speaker. I believe there won’t be a major change.

I’m a sucker for new things so I hope the 9 would be so incremental like the 8 as I just bought the 7 recently.

I don't know what to expect honestly, the last three years were very unexciting (minus the Ultra). I could see a new CPU for extended battery life, and maybe a more useful temperature sensor. I feel like the big changes that we're waiting for (blood pressure, blood sugar, etc.) are still a few years from commercialization.

It would be great if some of the features of the Ultra would trickle down to the regular lineup, like the dual-band GPS. Not expecting that, but it would be a nice addition

I am also curious if Apple will update the Ultra annually, or more like each 2-3 years.

Seems impossible to say at this point. Maybe they’ll skip the number 9 and call it “X” like the phones, haha. Like many people I mostly hope for better battery life, can’t think of much else needed.

Well if Peter Zeihan is to be believed about Apple having to relocate supply chains then you might be right, skip to the X but released in 2025 (along with all other Apple products currently manufactured in China)
