My guess is it is for a new bottom-of-the-line portable for the above average user and a reduced price. The price of the 12 inch 867MHz model is $1800, and it uses PC2100. Specs here.

I know the specs, that is why I am suprised that they left off the L3 cache. But yeah, it has faster ram, a better GPU, a G4, and nicer material than the iBook...that's enough for me to buy it.

price, maybe?

True..but wouldn't the lack of a 64MB of VRAM GPU, a 12" screen bring down the price as well? F*CK...I just noticed that it only supports 640MB of Ram as well. This really should have been an iBook SE.

It essentially is an iBook. Apple just decided to market it as a PowerBook I guess because it has a G4 (in which the name 'G4' also has to do with marketing) and DDR memory. Ah well. ;)

The biggest dissappointment for me, as it is at most macworld
expos, is the prices. I am 15, and my parents dont like the idea
of buying a new computer every year, so I have to buy it. I don't
want to get stuck with a computer that will be obsolete soon. I
need to be able to afford the high end, which is usually around
$3,200. That $3,200 needs to be $1,000 cheaper. I had to get
a new computer, and guess what I got? I got a PC. I got a PC
because for $750 I got a 2,400 MHz machine, only a month after
I had spent $650 on a 450 MHz g4. I just couldn't justify
spending $3,000 on a computer that is slower then the one I got
for $700. But if the computer was $2,000 I could be convinced ;).

As soon as I get a good job, and get a stable life (Im only 15, so
I don't really expect this any time), I will get the best computer
for the cheapest amount of money. Once I become a billionare
( it will happen ;) ), I will get every mac that comes out (and
a couple PCs, which I won't use). But as of now, I will get PCs
because, to me, they are the better deal. Some people may
disagree, but I think I made a good choice by getting that fully
loaded pentium 4 machine. Trust me, it is fast . I know I
would like the (slower) dual 1.25. But I would also like to have
money, and believe me when I say that getting a dual 1.25 would
empty my pocket....... and my penny jar....... and my bank account...
and all the money my parents would ever loan to me...... and any
chance to buy a computer (or anything else) in the next 4 years.

I hope you can understand. ;). So, my biggest dissapointment
would have to be not seeing any worthy pricedrops.

Right...and I guess the G4 doesn't support 512K L2 cache like the G3?

No iPod Changes...

The biggest disappointment at MWSF, I thought was that there were no updates or price drops for the iPods. I have been waiting to buy one, but decided to wait until after MacWorld to see if they changed them. But, I still like the iPod, and I will probably buy one soon.

May Steve Jobs help you. :p

I agree. Price is quite a scary factor. I mean, if it's an $800 new PC with all the sh** vs. a $3000 Mac with better material, well, you still get your money's worth. At least you still have A computer. :p

yeah, but in all fairness about price...a high end PC is just as expensive as a Mac....especially true when it comes to portables.

Disappointments?

None.
One thing: I'm using Safari now, and have been using it for hours. As a Beta it's solid. Only one site cused a quit, and that was pcmagazine.com. Try it.
No complaints, as I think this is a winner and will continue to improve... if they keep it SIMPLE and not follow the MS bloatware mantra.

i think getting a PC portable is stupid.

They aren't the same price. High end PC desktops compared to
'high end' mac desktops. You can get a 2.8 GHz pentium 4 for
-$2,000 on eBay if you shop it. I could only dream of finding a
sub 2,000 dollar dual 1.25.

Just like you, I wish macs were less expensive...... :( ;)

The DDR used in the L3 cache is expensive, but a SDR L3 cache probably would have been a better solution than no L3 cache in the low end.

I have a feeling the G4 12" AlumiBook would be slower than a G3 iBook at the same clock speed due to this cache situation...oh well. I'm still buying one...It will be an improvement from my 700mhz iBook.
