Sorry I am green in this category. Is there any real use for Toslink port in consumer (prosumer) life? Or is it just for audio professionals? I can easily find Toslink cables for sale on web, but no attachments using such cables. So what is such connection for?

Mac -> audio receiver for outboard surround sound processing on AC-3 or DTS encoded sources.

Digital connection for surround sound to an AV receiver.

Commonly used for Dolby Digital or DTS soundtracks from DVDs or other sources.

I picked up a nice set of Logitech speakers that have optical in, which in the end was in fact the best way to set them up(especially because I dont have a sound card in my G5 that will do the 5.1)

I think for the more consumer market, they would be use for something like a speaker set like I use.. or a receiver to hook up to a more powerful sound system.
