1) Make the dock better or let us turn it off (and hiding the dock is not a solution because it pops up when the cursor gets close).

2) Improve iCal, Apple's unloved redheaded step child. It hasn't seen a significant update in years.

3) Bring back the favorites shortcut area in the system prefs window.

6. PLEASE enlighten me... show me how to lock a folder with a password so that no one has access to it without the correct one. (And I am not talking about Disk Images).

There's probably a way to do it with the folder's privileges in it's "get info" window.

EDIT: Okay, here's how you do it.

1) get info on the folder
2) set group to "nobody" and no access
3) set others to no access
4) change the owner to "nobody"
5) close the lock

HOWEVER, there seems to be a window of time of about a minute when you can still change these privileges without entering your admin password. To gain access back to the folder click the lock and select your normal user. You will then be prompted for an admin password, type it in and you now have access again.

Oh yeah, and one more thing: Enough of this "The whole world speaks English" approach. I speak Hebrew, Which is a right-to-left language, and Mac OS X sucks big time in anything right-to-left related. It's too hard to switch writing directions (if the option even exists, it does not in most apps). And it's impossible to have any right-to-left work in either Pages, Keynote, Microsoft Office, you name it. iWork's templates are all from left to right, the text "jumps" to the left when trying to type hebrew text (or Arabic, greek, and hindi for that matter...). It's absurd. Besides, there's not even full system support for Hebrew/Arabic/Greek/Hindi (meaning Help, system menus etc.). That's a population of about 2 billion people that will not use Mac OS X simply because they don't know English.

Oded S.

You make a fair point, but I think your frustration is more with a combination of the free market economies from which compuers come & the curses of geography. The unfortunate truth is that many hebrew speakers are located geographically within a set of some larger in number (to that area) group, e.g. The USA. The greeks are surrounded by Left to right language speakers, and the average Hindi speaker isn't in a position to buy a computer. And since hindi speakers account for about 1.2 billion people, the number of people actually looking to purchase a computer that uses right to left interface is considerably smaller than 2 billion. I can't really comment on Arabic speakers, as the only ones I know well (who don't live in English speaking countries) all speak English and have never commented on this one way or another, nor am I familiar with the general economics of Arabia, the Gulf, Persia, or the middle east. With the exceptions of UA Emirites Dubai & Abu Dhabi. So since computers are too expensive for hindi speakers, and most hebrew and greek speakers are completely surrounded by people whose languages move left to right, it likely that there isn't enough demand to make computer companies spend lots of time developing right to left interface capabilities. I'm not saying it's fair, more like I think that circumstances are stacked against your wishes.

Actually, Mac OS X has a system-wide support for right-to-left languages. Just control-click on any textbox and you'll see the option for text direction. Many applications that use the standarad input framworks that Apple provides for developers have native text direction support, such as TextEdit and Adium. However, this doesn't apply to the applications you've just mentioned. iLife, iWork, and Microsoft Office all don't have support for text direction. It's up to the developers of those apps to add support for text direction.

As for the system menu localization, that could be a valid issue. But I've actually seen Mac OS X 10.2 with Arabic menus when I visited Dubai a few years ago.

Now there's a man with a sense of perspective. Did you get it from a small piece of fairy cake?...Hey stop getting so small! It seems you have become an invisible dot on an ivisible dot.

More desktop backgrounds.

I love Apple's right now, it's just that there so creative I want more!
haha.

It's hard to say what I'd like in 10.5, Apple is going to have to shock me...Tiger really wasn't that big of a change (Dashboard woo hoo) except for Spotlight that made finding stuff a lot easier.

One suggestion would be to speed up safari, it's not as responsive as it should be at times. It also wouldn't hurt to include tabs, I really don't feel like downloading add-ons.

More "appearance types". At the moment, only Graphite or Blue is offered. More of these appearances should be available.

200TH POST...

Safari has tabs. Do you mean for the Finder?

Go to: Safari -> Preferences -> Tabs -> and Enable Tab Browsing.

Hi guys,

Just wondering what everyone here wants from Leopard? I've made a list of things that I really think should be part of Leopard, but I'm sure Apple will have some much more exciting things up their sleeve, they always do :)

The entire system needs a GUI redesign to follow the new design of iLife. The new more professional looking design with less curves, more square and minimalistic. That would look simply amazing if the whole system could adopt it.

Safari needs to have better support for tabbed browsing and quick search. I don't want to have to use loads of add in programs to get my tabs to be worth using (to open all new windows in a new tab, to only close one tab when you close the window, not to let more than one window be open, etc.) and for quick search we need to be able to modify the search options without having to have an add in program too.

iChat needs to support MSN (including video). Since Microsoft doesn't seem to have any intentions of bringing webcam support to iChat, and MSN Messenger is generally a nasty app on Mac (though nothing like as bad as the Windows version) Apple really needs to take care of things for themselves and if it's at all possible make it so .Mac, AIM, Google talk and MSN contacts can talk to each other (or rather, so .Mac can talk to all of those).

Improve stability of Intel systems. I love the speed of my Intel systems, but this is Apple's first (officially released) version of MacOS for Intel and I can't help noticing it isn't quite as reliable as the old PowerPC systems were, although it's getting better with each update.

In Universal Access Zoom they need to offer a feature which allows the keyboard cursor to always stay centred on the screen like they offer it for the mouse pointer because at the moment it doesnt move the zoom window until you get to the edge of the screen and for some people this is difficult to follow when it moves suddenly to the middle again. They also need to fic the bug whereby if you're using the mouse pointer bt there is a keyboard cursor present it will keep jumping back to the keyboard even if you're not typing.

Improve Finder to integrate it wih the iLife suite so that you can do things from Finder. This is particularly important with photos. Finder can also be pretty slow compared to Windows Explorer, particularly where network drives are concerned.

Redesign the dock so that when you move your mouse pointer along it it will scroll along it so that when you add a lot of items at a low resolution the dock doesn't get really tiny.

That's all I really want. Any other cool new features would be appreciated though. What do all you guys think?

Your low expectations will see you pleasantly surprised at WWDC.

Now that Avi has gone, replace the XNU Kernel.
Use ZFS instead of HFS.

Keep everything else.

Actually, as a total utter wish which I doubt will ever come true - I'd like some way of transparently converting Xwindow apps to native OSX ones. Basically so GTK and QT apps can run natively on OSX without having to install Xwindows.

OSX Wants

Here's mine...

1. a tabbed finder [this would make me so happy for file move/copy type operations]

2. the ability to change the google search in safari to use whatever I want which in this case is google.co.uk with the uk pages only option set.

3. a solution to the 'too many applications / not enough room in the dock / dock icons too small' problem

4. persistent network drive connections

It's hardly the same thing, but here's a workaround that you might find useful. Use the dock as a finder tab structure. Let's say you have folder A and folder B that you want to move between a lot for the moment. In both folder's title bars drag the folder icon to the dock. Now you can click back an forth from the dock or move files directly to the folders via drag and drop to their dock icons. When you're done moving between those folders just drag their icons out of the dock. It's not a great solution for several reasons which mainly stem from the fact that the dock sucks, but it might be a useful trick for you.

  1. Add Virtual Desktops
  2. Add Virtual Docks
  3. Make it easier to customize things via Interface Builder. (See attached Pic for an example.)
  4. Add "Open in Terminal" to Finder contextual menu.
  5. Add "New File..." to Finder contextual menu.
  6. Display full path in Finder (without clicking)
  7. Add "Favorites" bar at top of Finder.
  8. Add "Open Console" to Finder contextual menu.
  9. Add Tabs to Finder.
  10. Increase detail in "Get Info" dialog.
  11. Increase detail in Column View preview.
  12. Add "Open Package" button in Column View preview.
  13. Add criteria-based "Select" to Finder.
  14. Add "Open With... > Running" to Finder. (All currently open apps are displayed.)
  15. Easily make Symbolic Links in Finder. (Not Aliases.)
  16. Easily show and hide hidden files.
  17. Fix the "When all files are shown, all files appear to be hidden" bug (Non-hidden files appear regularily, hidden files appear with lighter icons. This was present a while back, but disappeared at some point.)
  18. Launch/Open files as a different user easily. (Including Root.)
  19. Create disk images easily.
  20. Option to not display "Are you sure you want to change the extension?" Dialog.
  21. Generally speed everything up.
  22. Add warning message before closing multiple tabs/windows in Safari. (Not 3rd Party.)
  23. Add AdBlock and SessionSaver functionality to Safari. (Not 3rd Party.)
  24. Expand Bluetooth Support to:
    • Allow for greater connectivity with phones. (BluePhoneElite, except built-in.)
    • Use mic and speakers with phone.
    • Use phone for authentication. (If phone is present, require a single password to unlock/login to computer. If phone is not present, require two passwords to unlock/login to computer. I don't want the presence of the phone to eradicate the need for a password!)
  25. Add password-protected folders. (Not using permissions - truly password protected.)
  26. Make iChat an all-in-one IM client. (Including full IRC support.)
  27. Make iTunes support for more formats.
  28. Add QT Pro free. (Or at least put in Full Screen support for free...)

I'm sure there are more I'm just not thinking of right now...

Many of the changes to Finder are pulled from Path Finder. (I'd like it if Apple would just hire everyone at Cocoatech to Finder from now on.)

The Pic is not a mockup, it's one of the things that was easier to change - although there are plenty of others that I can't figure out. It is a more useful change when the computer is waking up, or stopping the screensaver.

Mulitple docks on all four sides of the screen would be cool

The dock is just an application right? So maybe this could be hacked. Maybe you can duplicate the dock application so you have three of them, launch dock 1 set to display on the bottom. Change your dock setting to the left and then launch dock 2 and then set it to the right and launch dock 3. Since the placement settings only take effect before the dock is launched the changed placement setting shouldn't change the placement of the docks that are already open. It might work, it might not, but if you want this feature you should give it a try. Personally I hate the dock and I'd like to be able to get rid of it altogether if I could.

What do you use instead?

I often just use alt-tab and alt-tilde to get around. I tend to use the mouse as little as possible.

Seriously, unify the UI.

YES! YES! YES!
Please, Apple, smooth the UI! Integrate the UI! Unify the UI! Feature-ize the UI, as is XP. Feng Shuei the frickin OS X UI! It SUCKS compared to Windows XP!

Mach kernal is going , moving a microkernal design rather than a hybrid of monolithic and microkernals. Some variant of NEXTSTEP, should run an awful lot faster, 3, 4, or even 5 times faster.

I think you're right....

Now, if you please, learn a better way to get your point across! What are you talking about?

and btw, Greek is written from left-to-right.

I think it'd be cool if it included the things that you have to use third party fixes to do - like clearDock for example and a nice alarm clock app.

Don't make us wish we had 64-bit architecture. Make it run great on 32-bit hardware. That goes for 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9 as well.
