1- Finder with multi task (really needed)
2- Samba that actually work well with Linux, was working well in panther but in Tiger it's a different story
3- tab in finder
4- a Theme manager (it's getting really mix up those days)
5- better location for every system pref (not only network or Energy saver), group them in one big location
6- Java that go faster and don't eat up all my CPU for a small thing
7- Faster 3D performance
8- Native sharing folder selector (not only public plz, or make some link that other OS can reach in them)
9- iChat true support of MSN network (Jabber just ain't cutting it)
10- QuickTime Pro for every one with a new machine, and better handling of .avi still messing up thing, now MPEG take a lot of ressource ?!?
11- Dictionnary that support more language (yeah, people just don't use english on there computer)
12- Dicrectory Access to a system pref panel
13- a lite version of Remote Desktop for personal use, so I can debug my parent, sister computer from a distance for a cheap price.
14- Widget that take a little less RAM
15- built-in virtual desktop (come on, nearly every Unix flavor have this)

Begin with that and I will be the first one to order

ah if you arrange by kind, it auto arranges by name as well as file type. Disks, CDs, and DMGs above folders above file types

Yes, I know about arrange by Kind (I've used it a couple of times), but as you say, the folders doesn't come first even then :(

wow didn't know that apparently i don't have folders mixed into certain places where they wouldn't come first :p

Well, these are the things I wish to see iin 10.5.

First of all, I want better 3D performance. OpenGL 2.0 support would be nice, and the existing support being faster is required. I want apple to activate Quartz 2D Extreme and fulfil their promises.

As fas as the colors and themes in OS X... I think apple will unify the looks of the next OS. But that is not enough for me... I want many themes for my OS X. Apple seems to be having problems deciding which theme fits best into their OS. So... why not giving the opportunity to the users to decide for themselves? I want them to implement the 3 themes they have used into their 3 latest OS's into a handy preference panel, that will be easy to set up. That way, everyone will be happy!

Last, but not least, I want a much more sophisticated Finder, with more options and customizations, without giving up the feeling os a simple and easy operating system... For example, I want a way to select some files from different windows and process them altogether. You can't do that now with files that belong to different folders... I think Pathfinder has a good solution for me to do that. But why rely on 3rd party applications to do this kind of job? Why not provide the users with a more sophisticated Finder? It's fairly easy to do so, the original Path Finder was designed only by one person alone, using c++.

PC Support

Maybe the ability to install on a typical Dell PC, and run PC Software. Those two factors are what make me avoid Mac.

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Do you know how many video cards, processors, motherboards, etc, Apple would have to support to make OS X run on a typical PC? The OS would be bloated. This is a big reason why Windows is more susceptible to crashes.

And if you avoid Macs, why are you in this forum? This is your 1st post. Did you come here just to troll?

Why do you even bother?

I think it's a legitimate concern about avoiding Macs if someone has invested in Windows software. I'd like to see MacOSX for x86.

Here's a question

Should I purchase Tiger w/student discount or wait for 10.5 to be released when I am no longer an official student?
Get the Tiger. I got my Tiger on from the EDU Apple Store (well, I'm officially still a student). I even got a student discounted family pack, ridiciously cheap, before they pulled that offer... :D

Surely there MUST be a DellRumors message board you can frequent, rather than hanging out here with us damned Mac owners/users!!!!!!!!!!

My wish list:

* Better Dock and Finder
* Have the UI be more abstracted, like X11, so that third parties can truly pick up where Apple dropped the ball and make better Finder / Dock with full functionality
* More tool sharing with x86 Linux when Mactels come out so that we can use Windows Media codecs
* Code optimization ... might be happening with x86 on the way
* A revolution in hardware to match the awesome OS X software. Like what Nintendo is trying to do for consoles, but with personal computing instead. I'd like to be able to touch-screen everything in OS X, for one thing. That'd be really awesome.

This may be what DoctorQ. was alluding to, but Open/Save dialogs should behave more like the (albeit imperfect) Finder windows -- allow you to move/rename/delete files and folders during O/S operations. In fact, they should be Finder windows -- you could choose your own View settings, column widths, etc -- and these would stick between subsequent O/S operations. Cramped O/S dialogs (yes, I know they're resizable) don't sit well with deep filesytems. And having two separate ways of viewing, navigating and manipulating the filesystem goes against the basic principle of interface consistency.

Of course, they'd need to post 'Save', 'Don't Save' and 'Cancel' buttons when called by a particular app, and there would need to be some way of associating a particular Finder window with a particular app.

Then any improvements made in the Finder's navigation would automatically be available in O/S 'windows', so:

Tabbed Finder windows -- these will come, I'm sure. If these were then carried over into O/S 'windows' (and the tab set was particular to a given application) you'd have a neat way of locally gathering together resources for a particular project that may be widely separated in the actual filesytem.

Or am I just talking out me erse?

i dont know if this is in macosx atm but i havnt found it is thumbnails view and built in slideshow

i would also like it if they didnt make these new versions unless it is extremly major like xp to vista but i guess it does deserve to be a new version in someways

PS does apple offer upgrades on macosx like seeing i just got my ibook i would hate to have to buy a full version of macosx again

I personally dont think the core of the operating system is Apples biggest priority

Its Apples application programs that are bundled with it and boxed seperately that need alot of work.

Something in either Quicktime Pro or iTunes that does video and audio conversion properly and quickly.

A decent basic office suite it does not have to compete with Office head on but iWork is just not good enough. Old Appleworks is just a mess.

1) Keep the UNIX sexiness and change all the "brushed metal" to the new "solid metal" interface
2) Have X and gcc installed by default shipped on the image rather then just on the DVD.
3) Don't bloat it with extra software.
4) Make spotlight even faster! Like crazy fast!!
5) A simple user interface to apply Meta Data to files (options based on file type) so that spotlight can become even more useful for our non-text based files.

Ease of use/performance should be paramount

I actually love Tiger. Howevere, here are some things I would still like to see:

1) While I don't fully appreciate the scalable vector graphics thing, it sounds like a fairly critical element as the OS moves forward.

2) My primary complaint about OS X is its complete disregard for consistency in some areas. I don't care too much about the way the apps look (e.g., brushed metal vs. aqua; see point #5), but I would really like for there to be a standard way to load & remove the various 3rd party apps. Some things end up in the services menu; preferences for some apps end up in my home directory while others end up in the system directory. If I decide to remove an app, I think OS X should be able to hunt down everything related to it, and expunge it. I hate deleting an app I no longer use only to find that there are still remnants scattered about in the system and preferences folder.

3) PLEASE! Make it so OS X is not so dependent on the internet. I know we're all headed toward broadband, but I should be able to use everything on my computer that doesn't absolutely need an internet connection. For example, today our DSL went out, and iTunes crashed (I realize this may be more of an iTunes problem, since it's now sending info back to the store  ). But Dashboard hiccups when there's no connection, Help Viewer just hangs, and Mail's behavior is just abominable. Obviously, if you want to browse Amazon.com, or sync your .Mac files, you need a connection. But, there's no reason those other programs should take such a performance hit just because the internet is missing.

4) Finder needs a complete overhaul. I think others have already expounded on this enough.

5) And I actually would prefer for the apps NOT to look all the same. The slight differences in Safari, iTunes etc are excellent visual cues to let me know which is which without having to give it a close look. I agree that perhaps there should be some logical organization to the schemes (e.g., making media apps look somewhat similar, but substantially different from non-media apps), but I definitely don't want iTunes and Safari to have the exact same polish.

6) Software: QT Pro should be standard with the new OS (it's ridiculous that we even have to ask). And just as iLife comes with all new Macs, iWork should be included as part of the package when you buy a "pro-level" Mac. And why, oh why, does iCal have to be opened just to display the correct date?!

7) OS-level speech to text.

8) Open Software Update so that 3rd party apps can use it.

9) Make the process of WYSIWYG printing more straightforward. I think this is really along the same lines as the consistency issues, but it may also be a graphics issue. Keynote slides with shadows and transparency, are printed with neither (despite my best efforts otherwise).

10) I'll let you know...

Come to think of it: All applications capable of running multiple (identical or similar) windows should have the ability to be run in tabbed mode... :)
