With the update today, it seems clear there will not be a redesign in 2019. What do you want to see in a redesigned 2020 iMac? What do you not want to see or don't care about?

I'd like to see:

-some kind of biometrics, probably FaceID (alongside an updated, higher resolution webcam). I would like to be able to use Apple Pay and the Wallet on an iMac.
-continue to have the SD card slot
-a backlit keyboard option
-reduced bezels, but not if it means sacrificing performance.
-SpaceGray color option (least important, but would be nice)

Aesthetically I think they can do a lot with it if they remove the bezels. It’d certainly hike the price but boy, would that be a machine you’d love to sit down to.

256 GB SSD as standard, Face ID, iMac Pro-style cooling in the 27-inch, desktop-class graphics in the 27-inch, 802.11ax, a couple more USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports, retention of user-upgradable RAM in the 27-inch, and Space Gray.

But several of these changes would decrease sales of the iMac Pro, and Apple can't have that...
My face reflected in the screen
Get a 2007-2011 iMac, before Apple started applying the anti-reflective coating. They make great mirrors if the room is bright enough.

Yeah I wonder how much they can realistically do to the iMac while still having the iMac Pro.

Unless the theory that the iMac Pro is just to tide people over until the Mac Pro is out is true.

Since you asked,

I'd love to see a next-gen iMac/Apple Display – be essentially a large screen 27-30 inch iPad pro with keyboard and mouse support. Still not sure if I'd want touch or pencil support.

• No Battery
• Face id
• It's own memory up to 1TB
• 2-4 Thunderbolt 4 ports
• It would have a large liquid retina display
• Powered by a new Apple-designed A12x or newer chip.

On its own, it would run a modified version of ios & could pose as a desktop solution or apple tv... but also could act as a slave display if hooked up to a MacBook Pro/mini/Mac Pro (I've seen this work with the mini and an ipad pro 12).

I'm even still OK with the current design and the bezels. I do wish to see iMac Pro class cooling system, Face ID, user accessible ram and NVMe ssd.

User expandability/upgradeability, meaning not glued together.

User should be able to replace/upgrade RAM, HDD, CPU, GPU, WIFI as improved options become available.

Yes, this means no proprietary device interfaces and/or firmware.

I think with the advent of the modular Mac Pro, upgradeability of the iMac will be minimal, if there is any at all.

I just ordered mine (see signature for specs) but I’m already thinking about my next one in 2025:
  • 31.5” mLED 6K display with 120Hz ProMotion and nearly bezel free
  • 64-core Apple CPU
  • 128 GB of RAM
  • 16TB SSD
  • Nvidia GPU
  • Thunderbolt 5 160Gbps
  • USB 4.1
  • WiFi 6
  • Support for Apple Pencil, with a latch that disengages when you grab the sides so you can lower to a shallow angle for creative work

Reduce Bezel
Adopt more iMac Pro Cooling
30" Screen
Add FaceID (which I'd accept if Bezel remained unchanged)

Better cooling. It's a desktop, who cares about thinness? Let it perform like a desktop.

A real GPU for once. Stop being exclusive to AMD. Nvidia is putting out some really good cards and the Mac should have access to them. Why are they selling what is essentially a 3 year old GPU?

SSDs. You are a premium company. Stop shoveling old spinning or hybrid drives down everyone's throat.

More TB3. The mini has 4, the MacBook Pro has 4, the iMac should have 4.

I would like to see:
- Reducing the bezel and chin
- Easy access to upgradeable SSD, RAM, CPU and GPU
- OLED screen with HDR
- Improved iSight camera
- FaceID

If Apple were to really go to town I would like to see a design similar to the Microsoft Surface Studio, where it is one massive touchscreen on which the Apple Pencil could be used. That would be awesome in Lightroom and Photoshop.

I know that the only thing that is remotely plausible is the reduction of bezel and chin. But one can dream, right? :)

  • Thinner bezels
  • Face ID
  • Reduced chin or eliminated altogether
  • 24” replacing the 21.5”
  • Backlit keyboard
  • HDR display
  • More USB-C ports, less USB-A (or none)
  • Thinner bezels
Although unlikely, I’d love to see a Liquid Retina display with 120Hz. Also, shooting for the stars here but how about making the stand base support wireless charging with new wireless charging Magic Keyboard and Mouse that you can place on it?

Oh and one more thing:
  • Thinner bezels

I would like to see something different in comparison to my late 2013 anything like a different stand lol. To make matters worse the MacBook Pro is already rumoured to get redesigned in just three years, in comparison to the iMac’s seven year span. I will hang onto to my current iMac until Apple can ‘think different’ about the design.

I'd like to see a spec updated iMac Pro with thinner bezels, at the price point of a high spec iMac.....

Any place but here or there....
Definitely SSD standard, RAM upgradability on both sizes, better speakers, improved Bluetooth connectivity and cooling system.

Cheaper RAM/SSD upgrade prices, meaning more bang for the buck with the low and mid-tier models.

Not in this order, but:

BT 5.0
Smaller bezels
No chin
SSD standard
Wi-Fi 6
Coffee lake CPUs
GPUs up to at least Vega 56

As for the screen, I doubt that with the iMac Pro they would give a bigger screen to the consumer version. Though I would appreciate HDR and 650 nits.

Height adjustment is number 1 for me. The current model sits too high for me. Good ergonomics require height adjustment to suit differences in the users.

I would also like to see better cooling.

Keep user accessible RAM. Add user accessible storage.

Smaller bezels so secondary screens can sit closer.

And on the point of second screens. Allow iMacs (and other Macs) to connect so that a pair (or more) can act as a single machine. This gives a dual screen set up with maximum power. It also means when upgrading, the old machine still has a use.
