I suppose they deserve the wage they deserve. But, the product they are selling does not require activation. They are absolutely lying if they say it does. I will just buy from the apple store next time :)

I just bought mine on Wednesday at an AT&T store and all they asked was my email address and told me to have fun!

Even if AT&T should insist on the credit check, is there something bad about it? I mean, would it have negative consequences, or could it just happen that they would not sell me the iPhone if they should not like my credit rating?

The problem is that every time someone runs a credit check it lowers your credit raiting, usually about 5 points. It is done to prevent somone from trying to get several sources of credit at the same time. Whenever I move and have to start a new rental and utilities, my credit rating usually drops 20 points for a month.

FACT. Anybody who's semi-conscious of their credit scores will do their best to avoid credit checks. Especially unnecessary ones like this. There really is no need for them to check your credit as owning an iPhone requires no contractual agreement*. If it were required, it would be a different story. But because AT&T tries doing this even though Apple lets you buy with nothing more than an email address is enough evidence to see that it's completely unnecessary.

*unless, of course, you're signing into AT&T for two years. This is also completely unnecessary and avoidable.

When I tried buying an iPhone from an AT&T store they wouldn't let me just buy one. They wanted ID, for some sort of proof of NY residency. They wouldn't let me buy the phone as a gift, they said they had to have me pre-approved. They wouldn't just let me run the activation at home (which I never planned on doing anyways).

Apple Store was an additional hour drive in each direction, but the phone's been worth it.

Nothing I'd Let Happen

I'm not interested in the iPhone until the next iteration. I've been, however, with AT&T for over 4 years in that time had my phones purchased in Dallas unlocked since I moved outside the T-Mobile network coverage area. AT&T has never furnished me phones.

I've lived in Fort Smith, AR (no T-Mo so it was AT&T Wireless before Cingular took over) and Tulsa, OK (T-Mo and the new AT&T).

Since 2005, we've never had a new phone on our plan. My roommate has a Motorola V551i while I have a Nokia 3650 from T-Mobile (only hers locked to AT&T due to her Nokia 3595 starting to crack on the interior plate).

Our plan with AT&T is OVER since September. While I want to get an iPhone and since it is considered an full price upgrade, I'd expect to just remove the SIM in my existing phone and plug it in. The last thing I'd want is to serve another two year sentence with AT&T after giving them a free year of which I could have upgraded. I've also read about people who buy the newer iPhone models and have their contact reset. That's just insane.
