I've never turned it on but the warning says to turn it off when abroad to avoid charges. So does that mean there is an advantage to having it on normally when your domestic? If so, what are the benefits? Better signal? Faster 3g?...????

It doesnt make a difference when you're in the US.
Only when you go out of the country it wont allow the phone to connect to another companys data network and rack up crazy data charges.
