I don't think the full sized iPad is going away. Some people want the bigger screen. If I had a choice, I think I would like an even larger screen, I just want it to be lighter...

Most of you seem to suggest that the bigger iPad needs to be bigger and faster...

For me, I think that the only way the big iPad will survive the cannibal is by becoming lighter and more portable.

If the full sized iPad becomes portable, it would be much more difficult for a miniature iPad to take over. Think about it, if carrying around a full sized iPad is as easy as the iPad mini, except you get more screen real estate, will people still choose the smaller iPad mini over the full sized iPad? Only if price were a concern (and that's why the mini was introduced right?). If they slim down the next iPad closer to iPad 2 with retina display, I'd be very tempted to upgrade.

I also think trimming down the bezels to make it look more modern wouldn't hurt as well, but that's not up to me,,

The mini is still more portable. iPad is for those who really want something that could replace their laptop. It just seems like thats whats been happening. I see more and more people using their big iPad in typical laptop fashion when I go to make a coffee run at starbucks. The big iPad is still more portable than any netbook or mba/ultrabook.

Right now, they are talking about a Retina Display iPad Mini dominating the Full Sized iPad. I'm saying that if the Full Sized iPad wants to stay ahead of the Retina Display iPad Mini, it'll have to up its game and the way to do that is to become lighter and thinner while retaining the enormous and beautiful 9.7" Retina Display. In doing this, there will be incentive to buy since it is easily as portable as the iPad Mini, yet have a larger display. It will justify the larger price tag.

If it remains the same weight, or becomes bulkier and heavier, the Retina Display iPad Mini will clearly dominate the tablet market.

HTC M7 will purpose a 4.7" with a Full HD resolution -> 468PPI
A Retina iPad Mini will have a density of 324.05 PPI ( http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html ) so, this device may not be considered as a top end device faced with the concurrency and it may use an A6/A6X CPU whereas apple could already propose the iPad 5 with a cortex A15 based CPU

I dont think the ipad4 has any problem with portability that lighter and thinner would solve. Its not exactly a bohemoth- its plenty portable. The issue it has with portability in comparison to the mini is footprint.

I can throw this in a coat pocket. The ipad 4 needs a bag. Lighter and thinner wont change that.

I personally agree with you, but it's amazing how people's perception of "portability" has changed over the years. My first computer was a 1983 KayPro II portable. I don't remember how much it weighed (it wasn't light), but you could latch the keyboard over the display, pick it up by a handle, and carry it from one place to another. A little over a decade later, I bought a Fujitsu laptop computer, and was thrilled to have something I could carry around in a bag, and that only weighed 10 pounds. My next portable was (and still is) a 2008 MBP, which, when I bought it, seemed so sleek and light at 5 pounds. Then I bought an iPad 1, which gave a whole new meaning to portability, such that my MBP stopped leaving my desk and the external monitor it's attached to. I now have an iPad 4, and it still seems light and portable to me. I'm amused by people who say that the full-size iPad is "too heavy." But if/when the Mini gets a Retina display, I'll probably buy one, and I suppose the full-size iPad will soon seem too heavy to me.
