An iPhone purchased after a particular date will be 1.1.3 'from the factory' or 'out of the box'. This is pertinent because they come with the most current Modem Firmware and Baseband; in the past preventing owners from 'unlocking' the iPhone to another carrier. Every update presents a new challenge to the hacking community and the challenge with OTB 1.1.3 was a working phone after 'jailbreak'.
