Superdrive that super?

I'll admit I had a hiccup in reading the many favoring, or believing, Apple will discontinue the optical drive in the MBP line soon, quite possibly in the next iteration.

But now it makes sense to me, and I can quite see why they would. For one, doing so would allow much more flexibility in the design and increased function of the MBP. Also, as Steve Jobs has supposedly professed, one should look to the MBA in the direction of these computers.

I still used DVDs on occasion, CDs rarely. But increasingly I simply download movies from iTunes, or watch them via Amazon Video on Demand. Music is all on iTunes already, or streamed. For when I might really need an optical drive, in looking discovered a perfectly fine Samsung external for $40 from Amazon.

As far as transferring files are concerned, flash drives using the USB port are simpler. More expensive than DVDs, but of course reusable. Far greater capacity as well. According to Wikipedia DVDs have capacities ranging from 1.5GB (SS SL), to 17GB (DS DL). You can buy an 8GB USB flash drive for $20, and if wishing it 32GB, for $140. Just the ordinary everyday files? $10 for 4GB.

Personally, I would far rather have a more capable laptop in lieu of an optical drive, once super, but now increasingly superseded.

I'd love to see what the battery life would be on the 17 inch with out a CD drive and an extra few battery cells in that spot.

Could be talking about the first 12-15 hour run time on a laptop.

Can we expect the next MBP's to opt for flash storage instead of hard drives, higher res screens, and even further improved battery life?

Will the extremely small logic board allow the 13" MBP to move up to i5 processors and finally sport discrete graphics?
It's all guesswork at this point. If you are thinking about one, just buy it, if you are in no immediate need I would wait.

I highly doubt the MBA will have any major influence in the MBP, they are two distinctly different machines for different target markets.

Who knows what Apple has up their sleeve... :)
