Download xbench (top right) and then do the test just for your hard disk... then let us know what drive you have and what it scored

:apple:

I have two and they scored as follows:

Stock drive that came with my MBP (Hitachi 250GB 5400rpm): 41.25
Seagate Momentus 320GB 7200rpm: 49.36

System Version 10.5.7 (9J61)
Physical RAM 4096 MB
Model MacBookPro4,1
Drive Type Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00

Disk Test 34.51

Will be upgrading the to the Seagate 500GB 7200 shortly.

17" UB MBP
WD 320GB 7200RPM "Scorpio Black"

Max over about a dozen runs, average in high 60's:

Very weird. Was it doing a Time Machine backup at the time (or some other process accessing the drive? You have the same machine I do, and it's hard to imagine that drive being that much slower than the WD. In fact, usually larger disks perform better (at the same RPM) because of higher areal density. There's a lot of variance with that, though, because of differences in the number of platters and heads.

Puzzling huh ?
I made sure that there was nothing running in the background just to make the score as accurate as possible.

I must say that I don't really pay a lot of attention to those types of scores and I am happy with the drive.

After running the test under several different parameters, I found this to be average, sometimes scoring higher or lower, sometimes with programs running or not, sometimes external USB (original HD) attached. Interesting, I had printer sharing, internet sharing on and it didn't seem to impact the overall scores, I also had dashboard on and disabled for some...didn't really seem to impact.

UPDATE:
I decided to run the test under actual everyday use, just restarted, didn't shut anything off, attached my external drives and tested. My scores were the best yet!

What can be gathered from tis is to run your test under "real world" situations, don't shut off or unhook anything... you might be surprised!:D
