I am thinking about taking the plunge - Trying to budget my money and would like to know what I might want to purchase in addition to the phone itself. What would everyone recommend as a must and so on ....

Applecare, insurance, protective case, extra or different charger, etc.

Though I originally bought it for my ipod, I have a dock and remote. A little more convenient for sync'in up to the computer and it is also plugged into my receiver for listening to music.

car charger, specifically the Belkin Dual charger.

on a related note I hadn't bought music or video (Netflix'r here) in centuries until I picked up an iPhone!

An extra cable and maybe an extra USB wall plug.

I keep one cable perma-plugged into my beside side wall socket. One cable perma plugged into my laptop at work. And I have a floater cable for syncing into the ol' MacBook.

I don't have a case, but I'd consider getting a nice, simple leather slip.

1 car charger
1 charger for work
1 USB/iPhone cable for your computer
(Use the charger it comes with by your bed)
Moving a cable around all day will eventually drive you insane. Just put one in these 4 places and you'll be fine. Take your bedroom charger with you when you travel, but otherwise just leave them be.

Invstigate ways to get the phone's audio hooked up to your car. Mehtods vary depending on what car you have.

I would encourage you to not get a case for the back, but that's up to you. It's a personal preference. I don't have one, but I understand the folks who do have them.

I would actually tell you not to get a screen protector. Makes the phone worse and I don't see the need for one.

I know I'm in the minority on those last two, but I think I'm right. And if I didn't have a big ego I wouldn't be posting my opinions all over this site, now would I?

I didn't buy anything else. I did buy a car charger after a few weeks though. No way did I want to risk breaking down with not much charge in my phone.

New case and screen protector. Happy to see most of what I had with my last iPhone still worked with my new one.

for my iPhone I have purchased:

RebelSerpent case
PowerSupport Crystal Film
Belkin charging dock

2 32 Gig 3GS (black) w/ Applecare.
2 packs of Power Support Crystal Film for the screen.
dual pack Griffin cases
1 Dock
1 15" Macbook Pro w/ Applecare.
1 15" sleeve
1 set of Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote
Mobile Me family Pac

and most importantly, a big goodbye to Sprint.

I bought a Speck Candy Shell, which I highly recommend, a Power Support anti-glare screen protector, and a Squaretrade warranty. Will be getting a car charger as well probably.

1. Xtrememac InCharge Auto (from my 2G iPhone purchase)
2. Zagg invisible shield (back only)
3. AppleCare
