Does anyone else remember them? I think it was beta testing of ios6? where they appeared for a few betas.

Think they will ever return? Would you want them to? I thought they were pretty cool..

Apple was tuning the parallax stuff. We never actually had full on panorama wallpapers.

I remember them. I hope they don't use them or offer them in the future. They seemed like a gimmick that had no real function.

I believe it was the early iOS 7 betas let you do it but they quickly got rid of them

    Yes we did..
I remember having full panoramic wallpapers in iOS 7. I used a pano I created from DSLR pics I took on a trip to Hawaii. It worked perfectly fine, throughout updates, until I had to restore my phone. Then it was impossible to get it back. I really miss this feature.
And when I say full panoramic I mean that. Not the parallax crap we have now.

As @kyemaloy has stated, Panorama wallpapers were available in an early iOS 7 beta. Here's a video with an example.
