I was in a Starbucks the other day. Brand new place. They had the new, free, AT&T wireless in the place (along with being a TMobile Hot Spot) and I was waiting for the Starbucks button to show up on my iPhone and it never happened.

What ever happened with that? Did the app just die? I think i remember Steve saying it would rolled out to all Starbucks by mid 2008 as the AT&T WiFi was being rolled out.

Has anyone seen this app work other then in New York, Seattle, or the bay area?

Roll out the wireless first in the Starbucks, then i imagine a concerted switch on. I'd guess it'll be either be on June 9th, when the Apps store comes out, or Late June when OS 2.0 comes out. Free wireless has been seen in Barnes & Noble too - best guess is Jobs is planning an American version of "The Cloud", getting B&N, Starbucks etc in on providing Wireless for iPhones and Touch iPods. Starbucks get the music button app, all able to give access to the App store.

No way will the Touch users get free wifi...

True - they should pay a nominal fee of say.... $20 dollars each time for such a privilege. Or a piece of cake and something related to a coffee bean. Put it down to financial accounting...

hehe

a minor correction, the AppStore.app is part of the 2.0 Firmware release coming in late June and will not be available on June 9th. Unless Apple decides to release FW 2.0 at WWDC.

I tried bringing this topic up on this thread, but nobody seemed to care. I'll quote again what I wrote:

Actually, speaking of the WiFi Music Store, what happened to [Starbucks being available on] that. It seems Apple has dropped the ball or something. End of 2007 it was available in New York, San Francisco and Seattle and by February 2008 it was supposed to be available here in Los Angeles (and Chicago by March) and yet, here it is almost May and none of the music playing in a Starbucks anywhere in Los Angeles shows up as "Playing Now" in the WiFi Music Store on an iPhone. Anyone know what happened to this feature?

One person responded saying that Apple probably hadn't made plans or worked out the details yet, but yes, there were very specific plans that Steve Jobs announced, with, as I stated previously, Los Angeles having this feature by February 2008, Chicago by March 2008 and the rest of the US by spring of 2009 if I remember correctly... and yet, nothing except for the original 3 cities launched in 2007.

What I want to know is when will Starbucks be offering free WiFi to customers that use their Starbucks cards? My local Starbucks now has AT&T, but no sign of how to use it with the Startbucks card. Having free WiFi for iPhone users on AT&T does nothing for me as my iPhone has no phone account right now.

Cheers for the correction.

In terms of Starbucks App - isn't it strange that there is a report from Register Starbucks has offloaded its music tentacle Hear Music?

The coffee monolith has turned over the operation to Concord Music Group, its partner in the venture, in what it described as "a restructuring of its entertainment business to focus on digital strategy and core content with music and books

The company added it would "look for ways to increase Wi-Fi related offerings and other in-store technology" - presumably a reference to its deal with Apple to roll out the iTunes Music Store in coffee houses across the US.

The low-key announcement is in marked contrast to last year's fanfaring of Starbucks' entry into the music business. On signing to Hear Music, McCartney said he was "impressed with Hear Music's plan to use Starbucks' 13,500 retail outlets to sell the album", and enthused: "For me, the great thing is the commitment and the passion and the love of music, which as an artist is good to see."

Glen Barros, president of Concord Music Group, declared: "This is a pretty powerful new platform, when you can reach 44 million customers per week through Starbucks stores."

http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/pressdesc.asp?id=790

Apple® and Starbucks today announced an exclusive partnership that lets customers wirelessly browse, search for, preview, buy and download music from the iTunes® Wi-Fi Music Store at Starbucks onto their iPod® touch, iPhone™ or PC or Mac® running iTunes while at a participating location. When a customer enters a participating location, their device will automatically recognize the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store using a high-speed Wi-Fi wireless network with no connection fee or hotspot login. Customers will be able to browse, search and freely preview millions of songs, including a new “Now Playing” service which displays the name of the song playing in the Starbucks store at that moment, then easily buy and download songs or albums directly to their device.

<snip>

After its debut in New York and Seattle on October 2, the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store will continue its national rollout to 350 Starbucks stores in the San Francisco Bay area on November 7; 500 stores in Los Angeles in early February 2008; 300 stores in Chicago in March 2008; and additional markets throughout the US later in 2008.
