Oops.... too late. Just rid it, Only because the fan was draining the battery too much. Thanks all for your invaluable help as always though!

Thanks Hobo, The fan kills the battery life, and makes everything harder to listen to with YouTube, because the internal speakers on old MBP have next to nothing volume.

My only reasoning for blaming Sierra/Safari is only based on all the years of 10.6.8 that was trouble free, apart from Chrome eating CPU/fan with it's horrendous 'helper'. Just not had so many minutes in the day where the fan runs so often, since updating to Sierra. Seems over the top. And I like YouTube and watch it a lot, It's a glitchy nightmare in Safari. Open to full screen and it returns to small screen, every single time I click full screen. Comments and sidebar take an age to download, and click page back it does weird things and shows desktop and other pages before it does go back. It's really bad for watching YouTube so fan on for Chrome instead. Not just a few problems on YT, but many.

Just googled rtprotectiondaemon which is using 98% CPU every few minutes and aggravating fan, but it tells me it's related to Malwarebytes. I turned off their Real Time Protection, but it still would appear to be running, if that's on? Tempted to bin Malwarebytes now

Have not had the CPU issue you mention, but I see it is legit, and others have similar complaints. I would uninstall Malwarebytes for now, and perhaps wait a bit for patch and install again and test.

Anything else eating RAM or with serious CPU issues?

Have you thought of just moving on from Safari? I like both Firefox and Chrome better. Unless there is some specific reason you need it...

I assumed after all these years Safari would be the one for OS. Ironically, the only reason I have tried to stop using Chrome, and wanted to reacquaint myself with Safari after all these years is because Chrome's fans on YouTube and videos are always on. 'google helper' by the bucketload, why so many? i used to see a couple of them, but since 'Sierra', there are loads of them in activity monitor now. 'kernel task', 'window server' and 'hidd' are usually the top 5 CPU, but I think that's pretty normal. Firefox has never seemed so user friendly as the others, to me. I know there's a pinch and zoom extension for it now which helps. I like Chrome best. It's just easy, and probably still quicker than Safari. But probably the biggest hog of all.
