MM-1 from B&W... LOVE THEM, can crank them up and never a single distortion. You get what you pay for, or in my case, great use for Miles from AMEX

Hey guys, my late 2012 27" is on its way and would like to get a nice pair of external speakers that would suit the iMac's design. Just curious to see what you guys are running with and what your thoughts are on them. Post a picture of your setup!

Try these http://www.orbitsound.com/product.asp?id=4

They come in white and sound AWESOME! Plus it's small enough to fit under the iMac

Well, I just got my brand new fully loaded late 2012 27"iMac today and I'm really happy with it!

To be honest, I don't have my speaker system yet but I have done extensive research on the subject and know exactly what I want to buy.

Here it is:

1. Bowers and Wilkins MM-1 desktop speakers: $500

2. 1 AudioQuest Dragonfly: $250

Connect a 3.5mm cable from the output of the AudioQuest Dragonfly to the Aux input of the MM-1 speaker system. The analog audio of the AudioQuest Dragonfly will bypass the internal digital circuitry of the MM-1 speaker system. You do this because the AudioQuest Dragonfly DAC is superior to that of the MM-1 speaker system.

This system will probably sound better than any of the options listed above this post.

Of course it will! But that's 750 bucks! So it should sound better, much better.
BTW, Let us know how it sounds!

Amen! +1 for the Dragonfly. Best audio investment I've made.

I've spent a lot of time getting to what I believe is a great audio setup. I've been through logitechs, including the famed Z-5500 surround setup, I've owned B&W mm-1s, bose and harman kardon. I've also experimented with using actual hifi components, and at one point was using a pair of B&W Nautilus 805s with a 2x120w jungson amp and an electrocompaniet DAC. This is the most pricey setup I have tried, but the BEST one I've tried only costs a fraction.

It's the Swans M200 MKIII. Powered speakers, beautiful design (if not as clean and simplistic as apple usually provides) and fantastic sound. There's a great review of them here.

Right now I have them paired with an Abrahamsen A-Dac. Very very happy with this setup.

I've been using Bose Companion 20 speakers. They were a bit pricey (then again, we all use Macs, so it's like we usually go for the cheapest option), but they kick audible ass.

I know a lot of people tend to say that Bose is ***** and that they merely have great marketing, but I disagree. These speakers are amazing and well worth the money in my book.

They aren't bad or outright garbage like what is commonly said about bose on any forum that isn't apple oriented. Just there is a price premium and a definite form over function slant. Which really lines right up with the apple market, and not so much in many other forums.

Point proven.

I think the Focal XS 2.1 are the best solution around.

Hi guys, I have the MM1 and I have to say they are great, even better than the bose.

cant wait for my new 2012 27"

I like my bookshelf speakers. They are Q Acoustic 2020i's in white, sound great
and really go nice with the iMac. (If you have the space, they are quite big/deep, imacs a 27" btw).

You sold me, but can not find anywhere to buy them. Seems everyone is out of stock. Help me locate a pair if you can, Thanks.

It truly depends on your purpose of them. style over function may not be the best solution.

There could be endless amount of suggestions, but if you want quality audio for a fair price and decent style speakers I recommend these (some have been previously recommended)

M-AUDIO - AV40s - they have great mids, and not too bad of bass, theyre not bottom heavy and dont muffle audio and dont need to be turned up too much to get crystal clear audio. can be hooked to a sub if wanted to.

AudioEngine A5 or A2 - A5s are beast of speakers similar to the AV40s but have a little more depth..i still prefer the AV40s. The A2s are smaller and still offer good audio quality not alot of depth or bass but still good for the size/price.

SWANS - there are a few models out there that are great. they offer great audio fidelity in a affordable price range. take a look at the in depth reviews and those who have them here, theyre great quality and have a lot of options.
