What happened to iMessages effects in iOS 12 on iPhone 8?

Realized tonight that I could not enable/enact the effects in iMessages on my iPhone 8 - I'd hold the blue send flat icon and no options would pop up. They do appear/work on my iPad. Looked online for help, tried various ideas, including all here:

Do you have something like reduce motion enabled?

Edit: Looks like that's mentioned in that article, so you probably checked on that.

Did you recently upgrade to an iPhone 8 from a different phone?

Yup! Used an iCloud backup from a 7 to get to the 8.

After trying everything I’ve seen in various articles online, I still don’t have iMessage effects. Has anybody else run into this? iOS 12.

Does 3D Touch work elsewhere on your phone? (Since you have to 3D Touch the arrow to get the effects)

By the way - I have AT&T. My gf has Verizon and it doesn’t work on hers either. Hers is a 6 or 6s. I believe the effects worked on my 5S though so I don’t think her limitation is her phone.
