In Finder go to > Finder > Preferences > Sidebar and check Hard Disks or in the general section, make sure Hard Disks is checked.

    Try that?

In the sidebar it should say "(Your name's) ____" and under there you can find it.

Ahh, good, was it a simple issue?

While in finder, I clicked on View > Show Path Bar and then simply clicked on Macintosh HD in the path bar and dragged it under "devices" on the left side. Perhaps not the most elegant way, but it did the job.

Open an instance of Finder, or get out of all other programs and go to Preferences -> Sidebar. Configure to your hearts content.
