What happened to TimeMachine when External isn't connected??

as TM can backup hourly or daily but i don't connect my external hdd to my mac all the time, then where does TM keep those backups? or it just stop or resume when i connect it back on?

ps. i turn on auto backup
 
If you backup to an external drive and it isn't connected to your Mac when TM is scheduled to backup, there will be no backup, until the hard drive is connected again.
