The biggest fail (IMO) on the new iPhone 12 series is the lack of improvements (any!) with Face ID. There were strong rumors of a “dynamic zoning algorithm” that would allow for faster and multi-angle unlock, which did not materialize. At worst, I was expecting minimal incremental enhancement to be noted due to the A14.

I had given up hope on Pro Motion and Touch ID power button, but the lack of any mention of any improvement on Face ID during the keynote or noted on the website was the most disappointing. I had already internalized that Pro Motion and Touch ID power button were not happening.

Am I the only one?

I wasn’t expecting the notch to be smaller, but I was expecting improvements to Face ID even before Max Weinbach leaked it. So...is it confirmed that it never made the device, or did Apple just not talk about it for some reason?

I’m honestly shocked that more people aren’t discussing this. I think it was the biggest miss of the keynote, perhaps with Promotion as a close second but we knew from the leak that Promotion was delayed to next year.

That rumor came from some random Twitter account.

The only credible stuff comes from guys like Kuo, Kang, L0vetodream, and Gurman.

Given the current situation I'm surprised there wasn't any new FaceID options. Maybe something in a later iOS update?

Generally, Apple pre-announces even if they're not ready for launch. For example, Deep Fusion didn't come until iOS 13.2. This year, ProRAW is coming some time in a future version of iOS 14. Don't expect any significant new features in the future.

Even if Face ID is faster now with the A14 there's no way Apple would have talked about anything Face ID related given the current situation and how badly it compares to Touch ID now that everyone is wearing masks. Not a good thing to put the spotlight on right now.

That makes sense and I hope you are right and we find a pleasant surprise once we start using these new iPhones.

great point. Hmmmmmm while I’m happy with faceid it’s disappointing if there’s no improvements like stealer angels. I may need to reconsider getting one...

Agree with what many of you are saying. I do think, given the pandemic, Apple will speed up and plans to improve under display or side button (easiest option?) Touch ID or retina ID or some system that works with a mask, for the next 2021 iPhone. Of all features, that would seem to be a high priority for the average user.

Really a big miss. The biggest thing I wanted was something that would unlock my phone with my face mask on. Sure other people feel the same. Big miss Apple!

They need to ditch Face ID and move on to Retina ID. Masks aren’t going anywhere anytime soon unfortunately.
I feel this is literally the reason. Also a lot of chinese people wore masks long before they created Covid. They have a serious pollution problem and to combat this, they worse masks outside.

It's not just the Chinese who were masks; it's common practice in several asian countries (ie Taiwan, Japan) to wear a mask. Not some much due to pollution; it's viewed as "common courtesy" to wear a mask to stop the spread of the common cold/flu/virus (and yes, this was done well before COVID).

You make a good point and yes I noticed this practice happening years and years ago as well.
Considering all of Asia is a huge market for Apple, it makes sense Apple's chosen route on this issue.

When the embargo lifts on Tuesday morning, I’m eager to learn whether or not Face ID has seen improvements, and that Apple felt like it may be too taboo to mention them. I hope this is the case but being that we haven’t even seen a mention of this on Apple’s website, I suspect it’s missing.
