One of the reasons why I also buy a prebuilt instead of a custom specced machine is because Apple seems to have this policy where custom built machines are not eligible for exchanges.

Is that true?

So supposing if you BTO a Mac, and it arrives defective right of the box, does that mean you will have to send it back and wait a few weeks for them to repair it instead of just having Apple send you yet another BTO machine?

No... if it is DOA they will replace it...

...That only means is that you can't exchange it during the 14-day free exchange period.

I'm not sure if you can exchange it afterwards (minus the 15%) though.

But hey, there's always eBay! (I'm a poet! 😛 )

My Mac mini BTO died after 2 days and they arranged a replacement to be shipped. Obviously you then have the painful wait while your new one is built and shipped all over again.
