I have seen so many people posting about how they returned or exchanged their phones. What happens to the returns that have been used? Just curious.

The returned phones are disassembled in a factory, and remanufactured. Outer cases are replaced (the alumnimum and glass can be recycled), and if there are any defective components, those are swapped out.

Then, they become white box models, for warranty and service exchanges.

That is a shame since some are only 1 -10 days old. I wonder if Apple predicted all of this mess when they produced two sizes and opened pre ordering sight unseen.

I'm sure they have an idea of how many will be returned

FYI even if you return an unopened phone, they will still open it to check the serial. Thus it also becomes a refurbished later
