I don’t know I can’t grow one to know. Guessing depends on the length of the beard.

It learns each time you use it. Over time as your beard grows it adapts to the changes.
Now if you had a really bushy wooly mammoth beard that was registered with face ID and one day you shaved it all off - then it probably wouldn't recognize the new naked face.

Nothing, at least from my experience. Face ID still works The only time it doesn’t work is when wearing a mask.

I grew a beard over the stay a home and Face ID works the same. When I set up Face ID I was clean shaven.

It makes no difference. When buying my XR I had long hair and a long beard. At the start of lockdown I shaved everything off, hair and beard. It still worked. Now I’ve grown back the beard and kept the shaved head.
I haven’t changed my Face ID settings at all and it has worked each and every time with no problems.

I can grow a beard in a few months and recently (during iPhone 11 Pro Max ownership) grew it out a lot --- no affect on Face ID. Shaved it off for the virus completely (from very long) --- didn't have to change a thing.

Now I've grown it back to where the picture is in my avatar.

So do these responses imply that it must use the nose and eyes as the key features for recognising the user?

They matter more than the lower part of the face. But, also, faceid is constantly learning. So if you unlock on day 1, and then you unlock on day 2, the slight difference in facial hair is not enough to confuse it, and now it knows you look Like what you look like on day 2, so that on day 3, it also isn’t surprised.

Unless you can grow a beard in a day, like from some bugs bunny cartoon with acme hair tonic, it’s not like faceid is seeing something surprising.

I guess if you were clean shaven and then went on a two week camping trip and came back with a beard it may reject you.

It might. I regularly grow and shave my beard, but, then, I unlock my phone every day, so no way for me to know what would happen if (shudder) i didnt use my phone for 2 weeks.

The only time I have ever seen Face ID fail to open was a guy I used to work for.
He came into the club dressed as Tina Turner one night after closing his other bar and with the face full of makeup and a wig it apparently had no idea who the hell he was anymore.
To be fair I didn’t recognise him either and knowing there had been a drag act at the other bar that night, I just assumed he was the act.

But...makeup shouldn't have any effect at all unless it's like some sort of molded clay that changed the actual angles and contours of his face.

Mine are polarised and Face ID works for me. However my cheap pair don't work.
Ah good to know. Your polarized lenses work with the "attention required" setting turned on also? The ones I tried to use yesterday were a cheap free pair.

Yes they work with attention required on.

Cheap sunglasses seem to have problems with Face ID

I know, it always bothered me too. My partner never has problems when wearing makeup or not with her phone, yet for some reason that night he just couldn’t get into his and had to keep entering the passcode.

As the other's pointed out FaceID is smart enough to pay attention to how your face changes throughout the day, and from day to day and keep track of it. So as you grow a beard slowly it learns what your face has changed to a tiny bit each day.

I believe it also pays attention to the past in case you change back. So for example as you grow a beard it is a slow change over time. Then once you have the beard if you shave it all off Face-ID still remembers what you looked like before the beard so it just compares your face to that older version and knows that it is still you.

I normally have facial hair, either a full beard or what I believe they call a VanDyke. When I bought my 10S Max and set it up I would have had a VanDyke and then started growing a full beard shortly afterward. The following summer I shaved my face completely for the first time in about 10 years. Face-ID failed to recognize me the first couple times after I shaved, but after I entered my passcode a couple times after letting it fail it seemed to realize that it was me and learned my face without facial hair. I did not have to set up Face-ID again, or teach it a different look.

I've gone back and forth between beard and VanDyke a couple times since then without any issues.
