lol turn myself in
i actually own the leopard os bought from an apple store the second day after it came out, couldnt get it the first day cuz i was just too lazy to line up.
i was just curious because there are people that i know that actually have the pirated version and i thought it wasn't suppose to work efficiently because i thought that you wouldnt be able to update it so some of the bugs or w/e would still be in it

Typically the OS phones home and compares with Apple to see if it is legit. If it is a non-confirmed version of the OS, then Apple puts you on a list of SIIA (Software & Information Industry Association) violators and you will likely never know its happening. The FBI will then contact you with a threat of jail time or something like that.

Someday, I wonder if we will go to a rental model.

For example, if you use Microsoft Office, you pay Microsoft a set fee each month. This fee entitles you to use the applications and receive free upgrades for life (as long as you pay the rental fee.).

Doesn't that violate the "Cruel and Unusual Punishment" clause of the Constitution?:(
No, it doesn't. Frankly, I'd much rather use Windows ME than any of the crap that was the classic Mac OS.

I believe Microsoft has toyed with the idea of a subscription in the past, and may use it for future releases. I believe they are working on an online version of Office that may end up being paid for in this fashion.

Right, because when I bought my copy of leopard I gave the store my full name and address  Apple has no way of knowing if you paid for it or not.

Other than Adobe and Microsoft, a lot of software is based on trust. They HOPE you won't pirate it, though technically you usually can.

And this is actually why I DON'T pirate this stuff.

Apple makes a quality product. They sell it for a reasonable price. And they don't cripple it with serial numbers, activation codes, phoning the mothership, disabling updates, or anything else that basically sends you the message that you're a criminal that can't be trusted.

A quality product, at a good price, and respect for the end user (me). I like that, I respect them back, and I pay for the software.

If too many people pirate the goods and prove to Apple that we ARE criminals that can't be trusted, then they'll start doing what Adobe and Microsoft are doing. I don't want that.

This is first time using a pirated software.
I was wondering what would happen if someone registered a pirated apple software online. Is it risky?

Thanks

Apple doesn't care about pirated os x because they don't make money on it. They make money on the hardware that is required by it.

If Microsoft would make PCs then probably they wouldn't care about pirates either. Microsoft's main income comes from selling software. Apple's main income comes from selling iPhone.
