Um I'll add another line to my family plan and have 3 iphones and a razr. And no-one else in my household will use them. my girl wont touch the iphone. She prefers the centro and verizon. Don't ask me why..

Same as last time. Craigslist.

How much you think an iPhone 3G will be worth on Craigslist, when a new one comes out? It is only worthwhile to an AT&T customer, I suppose, who doesn't want to stay in a contract...

This isn't like regular phones where the new one comes out and the old model get no love at all. Owners of both earlier model iPhones will still be able to get the 3.0 software for free. They just obviously won't have the newer hardware.

So to answer what happens to my 3G when the new one comes out, I'll be updating it to the 3.0 software. :)

There will be absolutely NOTHING the new iPhone will do that my 3G can't or at least what I care for. :p

Will wait for the June 2010 model for a significant upgrade. :D

If I'm being reasonable, I'll hold onto my 3G and just get the software update until I'm eligible for upgrade in December.

But I'll probably get the new iPhone and sell my 3G on craigslist. :apple:

Same here. I'm not going for this year's, I might buy next year's since my contract expires August 2010, but if by 2011 I haven't bought the new one then I'll probably cave and buy an iPhone then.

When the new iPhone comes out your old iPhone will self-destruct. There is a small amount of C4 on the main board. It won't do any damage to the owner. It's just enough to destroy the motherboard.

This is Apple's way of ensuring product demand.

Didn't you think of that when you bought it? All 'phones become obsolete/overtaken by new models. What's more, why are have you already decided on buying the "New" model before you even know the specs? ;)

Why would he think about what he was going to do with his phone when he bought it? He is simply asking what he should do with it when he decides to upgrade to the new one (just like he won't think what he will ultimately do with the new one at purchase)

Depends, keep it on 2.2 or earlier or 2.2.1 with 2.28 baseband and you might fetch more as the new phones won't be able to be unlocked. :) I sold my original 16GB iPhone for $500 and bought a 16GB iPhone 3G for $299.

brother broke his phone right before the 3g launch. first gen went to him, and i got the 3g. i figure the same thing will happen this summer.

What will happen? The rotation you described, your brother breaking his phone right before the launch, or both? :p

I will be upgrading the software of the phone to the 3.0 os, and probably ditching my jailbreak....that is if it isn't jailbroken allready after the update is released. I will be keeping my 3g though, as I am coughing up the money to get the craked screen fixed  Oh yeah and my contract isn't up untill December of 2010 anyways.

i skipped the 3g to wait for this one. when the 3g came out i took one look at it and dismissed it as a cosmetic upgrade, which it is. 3g just wasnt worth the upgrade for me. so this new one will be significantly different from mine which is 2 years older. cant wait! im getting one as soon as it's out, my old one is going on ebay or craigslist. i just looked at the prices on ebay and people are still getting over $200 for them

How are some of you with 3G iPhones just giving it to friends or your brother? Don't you have a 2 year contract from last summer? or can you just switch the sim cards on the phones? You guys aren't buying out your contracts are you?

I'll probably give it to my mom and buy the new one. I don't know if I'm going to get it right away though. I might wait until the end of summer.

... they'll just buy the phone at the subsidized/unsubsidized price and sign a new 2 year contract and the older phone just becomes deactivated and the person who receives it can either activate it themselves or just use it as a chunkier iPod touch with a camera.

And nobody is exactly sure if ATT is going to let people upgrade at the subsidized price and then make people sign up for a new two year contract, as the original iPhone wasn't subsidized so there wasn't really an issue for letting people upgrade to the subsidized price.

I think I will stick with my 3G until summer 2010 but it depends on the specs of the new model and what price it will carry, 32 gig would be nice :)

If I buy a new one I might give this one to someone in my family

Although I don't know for sure, I would also venture to guess that the 'no commitment' pricing is there to sell down stock before the new iPhone is released and not a permenant business model.
