So I got a mac for osx but now have found a temporary situation where I need to run windows. What happens when I'm done with windows can the drive be "de-partitioned" and reformatted to the apple format?

Yes, theres a nice little button in teh boot camp assistant which allows you to restore your drive back to a single volume. Windows partition will be gone, all your other stuff will remain.
