Just found this thread! So many great uses for these still-powerful machines!
I have a 13" early 2011 MBP that I bought used in 2015. I maxed out the RAM (16 GB) and replaced the original 320GB HDD with a 480GB OWC SSD.
These days, it sits off to the side with two main functions:
1. I have my Time Machine disk attached, and its sharable so my main M1 MBP backs up over the network without having to be attached locally.
2. It runs Network Logger Pro to track outages on my internet. I started doing that during COVID, when my son's college classes were all online, and he used to say the internet was down a lot during the night (most of those turned out to be his machine. The ones shown in the pic below were recent problems that Xfinity was working on and notified me about, but overall the service is very reliable.).
